#Classic #Science #Rant Today our #ProjectGrant for the @snsf.ch was rejected. Not going to lie, I’m disappointed. Thx to the reviewers, I think there are things we can improve for the next round. But I struggle to reconcile “high-risk” research with the amount of preliminary data being asked for.

The brilliant Kris Kuo, with help from Fabian and the Werner lab, has identified a key driver of cyclic gene expression in Sulfolobus, which has a cell cycle but no CDK/cyclins. Amazingly, TFB2 has a cyclin box that regulates its degradation as cells exit division. Another reason to love archaea!

Ancient protein families age like fine wines, layering flavour upon flavour over billions of years. Peeling back the layers needs an evolutionary lens: it might turn out the function that made them famous might not be the first or the most important one.
