Today in "I read too many advice columns:" I've noticed a genre of letter that is basically "everyone knows it is common decency to do [thing] and I want to cut off people who did not do it" in cases where there is not actually a cultural consensus that [thing] is an obligation or even a good idea

The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context. I've been a public educator for over 20 years and I have never, ever seen it this bad.

Saw an interesting thread about disliking A Chritsmas Carol as a story of redemption. Going to thread here instead of QPing because I want to talk instead about the modern take as a whole. Because ACC wasn't originally a story of redemption. It's about repentance. 1?

Maybe if more than 40 million people have student loan debt,* the issue is bigger than individual decision making. Maybe, just maybe, the issue is that education is a public good that is purposely underfunded and treated like an optional, consumable good. *1 out of 6 adults in the country

“Tech billionaires want us to believe that our embodied/human ways of knowing are useless”. That’s exactly it. All those ads for “AI” products saying “stop hiring humans” and the like — The real target audience isn’t employers. It’s the rest of us. The despair they make you feel _is the point_.

I'm attending a digital humanities event in Montreal. There was a keynote on AI and something about the talk made me wonder if it had been written by Claude. I said as much in the Q&A. As I posed the question, the speaker shifted, looking slightly uncomfortable. What he said next shocked the room +

 Page from a book saying:

From EARTHSEED: THE BOOKS OF THE LIVING
Choose your Leaders with wisdom and forethought.
To be led by a coward is to be controlled
by all that the coward fears.
To be led by a fool is to be led
by the opportunists who control the fool.
To be led by a thief is to offer up your most precious treasures to be stolen.
To be led by a liar
is to ask to be told lies.
To be led by a tyrant is to sell yourself and those you love into slavery.

I just do not understand this. Why are people including citations they haven't read in the first place??? You citing a paper because something materially in the paper (generally in the results or methods) emphasizes or supports something you are saying. How do you get there without reading?

In addition to railing against AI, I also get to rail in favor of learning search query skills
As a man with a library science degree and thus a nerd about searching for information generally, stuffing search tools with AI is also bad for everyday people’s ability to understand and query systems, if you’ll bear with me through a little rant. Everyone faces a challenge when exploring a new library catalogue or work database or figuring out boolean operators in Google, but learning to talk to a system in its language is one way we get a sense of how its creators structured it and their worldview and priorities. Going through a system’s results also teaches you how to think about them critically: Are they what I’m looking for, are they trustworthy, what information do they connect to and reveal? Google Search is probably one of the first and primary places that people experiment with and grow their information searching skills; spoonfeeding them AI summaries while obscuring or bypassing the source of the information might seem convenient, but it’s just robbing them of the chance to develop vital information literacy skills that they need more than ever in an AI-obsessed world.

I think it’s really important when you get something wrong that you fix it. We are in an age of parasocial journalism where everyone is talking into tiny microphones. People have their faves and they trust what those faves say. If you get something wrong, fix it. It makes you more credible.

Students feel that, too - the whole environment is fraught.
