Really classy to end with Dr. Hayden, and with that quote specifically.
A lady came in, and as you know, in public libraries, there are a lot of people who are homeless, so they just need a place to be. She comes into the central library and goes up to the information desk.

She has very interesting attire, and this big bag. She asks to see the head of the library. I was the head of the library. The librarian — and this is what they do — tried to get more information from the person. They said, “Well, what would you like to see her for?” She opens the bag and she puts out on the table an injured bird.

And the librarian says, “Oh, what would you like her to do?” And the woman said, “Somebody’s got to care.”

Not to mention of fashion? Like there’s no such thing as entirely machine-made clothes. It’s like saying romance writers and sweatshop workers (oh, hey, who are predominantly women!) are lesser creators than literary fiction writers and tailors (oh, hey, who happen to mostly be male! Still!)

I really wish more journalists would poke at the pricing model of these products. UpToDate is all but expected to be available in my experience but it is a nightmare of a cost and there is no reason to expect something like OpenEvidence is going to remain free or cheap for long. No AI thing will.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

"There is no shame in wanting to be alone yet also wanting the comfort and the strength of your brethren. But more importantly, there is no shame in wanting to protect those who are your hive, even if you never knew them."
Yet sometimes this book is not enough. You sometimes Want more. You want to belong Again, there is no shame. There is no shame in wanting to be alone yet also wanting the comfort and rhe strength of your brethren. But more importantly, there is no shame in wanting to protect those who are your hive, even if you never knew them. For they are yours, and they are being taken. It is us or it is them. There is consolation in dying in the pursuit of justice, no matter how small or big that death is.
