Neiman Marcus closed its downtown Dallas flagship on Wednesday. The store played a notable role in the history of desegregation in Dallas. Previously, Black shoppers across the US could enter department stores, but they weren't allowed to try on clothes without adhering to certain conditions. 🧵

This is a good article but it really should've focused more on landlords squeezing every penny from people. This man earns £34k a year and needs to earn more just to rent a shared room. Something needs to change and quickly. We can't end homelessness without dealing with landlords.

Been thinking about this (from Huw Lemmey) a lot again recently.
You come to understand that the class system soaks into everything in Britain: how, at the top, they’re all essentially the same. The socialists are all aristocrats, the satirists are all bullies. Everyone is related to each other, or went to school with each other, and all are invested in keeping the class motor running. I myself went through a process that I think is a common disillusion. As an socialist eighteen year old, full of rage, you think Britain is a cesspit of conservatism, ruled at the top by a parasitic monarchy, where everything is rigged in favour of the rich. You think Britain is a closed shop where an Oxbridge elite perpetuate a system of patronage, of jobs for friends and the children of friends, where mediocrities rise to fame and fortune and where those who are talented but aren’t rich and white and usually straight and male rise only as performing seals or in order to line their pockets or flatter their egos. You think Britain is only a simulation of a democracy, where opposition is tolerated only so far as it shores up the establishment, tarts up the place to look a bit more modern, or where criticism is allowed only as an escape valve, to release pressure, where satire is a jester to a court that laughs then continues just the same.

Then you grow up a bit, and realise, of course, things are a little more complicated than that. Change is a slow process, realised in incremental steps that might seem invisible in the short term. Negotiation is the British story, the slow accretion of progress, the winning over of heart and mind. You get over your youthful idealism and realise that, while change is slow, the process does perhaps work. Not ideally, and not every time, but the power elites that once dominated British culture and society are seeing their power eroded in favour of a more open, egalitarian, and democratic national culture. Then you grow up some more, and realise you were right the first time, and the joke isn’t funny anymore.

This is absolutely extraordinary, and a record donation to a UK political party by some margin.
Reform UK has received a record £36million donation in a major boost to Nigel Farage after a difficult summer for the Reform leader.
Ben Delo, a cryptocurrency billionaire, told the @Telegraph: "I'm giving £1m per month to Reform UK until the expected 2029 general election, to help them get ready for government."
Nigel Farage said: "I am honoured and humbled that Ben Delo has shown such confidence in Reform.

How having a disability became cool
Young women, nicknamed ‘sickfluencers’, are turning chronic illness into a lifestyle trend and entrenching a culture of economic inactivity

Young women are also more likely to get caught up in “social contagion” – the spontaneous spread of behaviours or emotions previously observed by sociologists in “outbreaks” of bulimia, self-harm and transgender ideology. What may have otherwise been transitory feelings are seized upon and obsessed over until they form a central pillar of a person’s identity. A chronic-illness influencer won’t want to get “better” any more than a female-bodied transgender person would want to re-identify with their sex.

Finally, Cofnas's defenders frame calls for a disciplinary investigation as censorship of “controversial” science. In this regard, it is important to note that Cofnas does not perform research on race and IQ himself. Cofnas published two articles in which he argued that scientists should be free to investigate the connection between race and IQ, but these are not scientific articles on the matter of race and IQ itself. In his academic articles , Cofnas presents the relationship between race and IQ as merely a hypothesis: “there is nothing that would indicate that it is particularly unlikely that race differences will turn out to have a substantial genetic component.” Compare this to his language in the introduction of “A Guide”: “ a hereditarian revolution is both feasible and desirable. “Race realism” is the best term to describe the scientifically correct position. ” The problematic passages in the blogpost are not part of original research, but are ideological statements based on pseudoscientific sources and a false representation of the existing science. Cofnas is not under investigation for voicing a hypothesis in his academic writing, but for the problematic statements made in his blog and in other non-academic settings, all the while using his affiliation to an academic institution as a way to create the illusion that his views are a form of academic discourse.

New from Kathleen Stock: I am too dumb for climate change
Climate change discourse leaves me cold

Kathleen Stock
AUG 14 2026
…
Inevitably, the usuals are using the fifth heatwave of the English summer to hammer home their preferred theories about the origins of about climate change. But I can't be bothored to attend, and it isn't just because of the brain fog. *I find it impossible to navigate such large-scale intellectual terrain, where the very nature of the problem is radically contested, let alone the solutions.*

Whether apocalyptic or deflationary, every point in this area seems to be delivered with identical confidence, in
equally technical language. So who do you trust? A popular way to negotiate the thicket seems to be to pick the political side you hate most, then lampoon everything its representatives say on the matter, and conclude the opposite must be right. Unfortunately, though, I dislike Right and Left equally for different reasons, so that doesn't much help.
