we are going to have to find an alternative to meta products for local communities and advertising, right now, it’s almost impossible to do any kind of local business or art project without it, but both their rules and support are so arbitrary and capricious that you can’t rely on them

I keep seeing this Semafor graph that seems to show the Trump administration’s effect on international visits is comparable to the pandemic. My first thought was “that can’t be true” and indeed it is not. This is monthly data. We only have to Jun/Aug 2026. The lines are over-fitted to the months.

This was a fun one to record. The Harit Setu plan is very cool. Instead of a piecemeal approach—a short bike lane here, a fixed intersection there—the city is redesigning entire neighborhoods at once to create complete networks of bike lanes and continuous sidewalks as well as green infrastructure.

This makes me hopeful. This number is aspirational but nowhere near out of reach: a working professional could realistically cash out their 401k and buy off a public official. Owning a senator is more attainable for most Americans than home ownership.

this from @ftrain.com is terrific, unsurprisingly, and I think this sentence actually understates the issue; it's not just that the big labs are in a hurry, it's that they don't see producing useful and well-documented tools for using these models as an important part of what they're doing
I don’t blame the coders for this, or even the bosses. I blame the big A.I. companies, who are in such a hurry that they often release new versions of their models and tools without manuals or even clear YouTube tutorials.

TIL that Mohamed Atta was a professional urban planner, of the preservationist nimby persuasion, and that his graduate school thesis was about how high-rises ruin neighborhood character 😳.
Screenshot of the Wikipedia page for 9/11 hijacker Mohamed Atta that reads, “ At the Hamburg University of Technology, Atta studied under the guidance of the department chair, Dittmar Machule, who specialized in the Middle East. 19] Atta was averse to modern development. This included the construction of high-rise buildings in Cairo and other ancient cities in the region. He believed that the drab and impersonal apartment blocks, built in the 60s and 70s, ruined the beauty of old neighborhoods and robbed their people of privacy and dignity.”Screenshot of the Wikipedia page for 9/11 hijacker Mohamed Atta, with a highlighted sentence that reads “He criticized how the newfangled skyscrapers and other modernizing projects disrupted the fabric of communities.”

Hm. As someone who's done anti-abuse and code of conduct work before: you don't want your rules to be too specific, because there are people who make tap-dancing on the line their whole personality. But they DO have to be specific enough to be clear, or people won't actually know what not to do.
