This is a photo of our home planet taken only a few hours ago! So what? We have photos of Earth taken from space every day. Ah, but *this* photo was taken by a spacecraft ON ITS WAY TO JUPITER.
From the source: "Mostly black space, most of Earth visible at the top right of the image. Part of a spacecraft visible on the left."

These are what the clouds on Jupiter look up close. The small patches of white are cloud tops, soaring above the main, colourful cloud layer. Image from NASA's Juno spacecraft during its 38th close approach to Jupiter on 29 November 2021, processed by Kevin Gill (@kevinmgill.bsky.social)
A complex, swirling pattern of lighter and darker clouds. One large system, angled to the upper left in this scene, is a tawny brown colour and is elongate. Another, more circular storm system is at lower centre, and is a grey–greenish colour. The background swirls are various shades of grey to blue; small, white features dot the scene.

Jupiter - From Gordan Ugarković (ugordan.bsky.social) - flic.kr/p/BfyQX
This is currently my best guess at a true color image of Jupiter. Color balance is based on recent Earth-based views and also using Hubble images. The image was taken by Cassini on 13 November 2000 and is one of the last single-frame footprints on approach where all three approx. red, green and blue filters exist.

Narrow-angle composite taken from a distance of 44.8 million km and at a phase angle of 18 degrees.

Did you see this really neat image from my thread yesterday? It was taken by AS Fruchter at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory and is an H-alpha image (hydrogen gas emitting as the 21cm photon). Here is an updated, annotated version from me. We don't see the pulsar here, only the WD.
grainy image of the PSR J0437-4715 system creating a bow shock as it plows through the Galaxy. A red line is drawn between the pulsar and front of bow shock and annotated as being approx. 47 times the Sun-Neptune distance. The pulsar dot itself is annotated, noting that the pulsar and the white dwarf are only 1 million km apart. A nearby galaxy, RX J0437.4-4711 is also annotated.

Wow: Giant new impact crater spotted on the Moon! An asteroid the size of an apartment building hit the lunar surface in early 2024 & created 220-meter (730-foot) wide McGetchin crater. It's "the largest contemporary impact crater found in the Solar System." 🧪🔭 science.nasa.gov/solar-system...
Officially named McGetchin after pioneering lunar scientist Tom McGetchin, the crater formed on the Moon’s eastern edge sometime between April 11 and May 22, 2024, after a comet or asteroid the size of a three- to six-story building hit the surface.

The crash left a crater, 728 feet wide, that spans the length of two football fields. And at 141 feet deep, the crater could fit three vertically stacked yellow school buses. Scientists estimate that an impact of this magnitude happens on the Moon about once in a century or even longer.

Aurora over Raisting Earth Station with Moon - From Simeon Schmauß (stim3on.bsky.social) - flic.kr/p/2pQoiDV
What a crazy night, we went into it not expecting much since the solar storm was forecast for after sunrise in central Europe.
However, before the sun had even set, I got the alert that the first CME had impacted Earth, so the chances immediately looked a lot better. What then unfolded surpassed even our wildest expectations.
We ended up driving to this satellite ground station south of Ammersee in southern Bavaria and just when we arrived we spotted the first diffuse pillars north of us.
We experienced three waves of incredibly strong Aurora, especially for our rather Southern latitude. During the second wave we saw individual pulsating filaments dancing over our heads. What a breathtaking experience!

Many thanks to Christopher for accompanying me on this adventure, Max for being an all round great guy, and Sebastian who lent me his wide angle lenses that made these shots possible.

Antennae Galaxies collaboration: Ultra-Deep High Resolution View - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - flic.kr/p/r2XHAw
The Deepest and Highest Resolution View of the Entire Antennae Galaxies

This image is a collaboration between astrophotographers Federico Pelliccia of Italy and Rolf Wahl Olsen of New Zealand and shows an ultra-deep and detailed view of the famous Antennae colliding galaxies in Corvus.

The image was constructed from a number of sources: First a mosaic of panels from the 8.2m Subaru telescope was very patiently put together by Federico Pelliccia. This data was subsequently blended with Rolf Wahl Olsen's Antennae Galaxies Extreme Deep Field - 75 Hours to bring out the faint tidal streams and large scale structures which was not present in the high resolution Subaru data and this deep image also provided the colour information. The core was further enhanced by overlaying an extremely detailed frame from the Hubble Space Telescope.

Together this data represents the deepest and highest resolution view available to date covering the entire Antennae galaxies.

Moonrise over the Philippine Sea - From Simeon Schmauß (stim3on.bsky.social) - flic.kr/p/2q8kP47
Astronaut Matthew Dominick took this picture of a crescent moonrise on July 6th 2024, while flying above the Philippine Sea. The shadowed side of the moon is illuminated by earthshine.

This is an HDR stack of images ISS071-E-310105 to ISS071-E-310108. I really should have chosen ISS071-E-310102 to ISS071-E-310105 which were from the same sequence and had therefore less parallax.
But even then, the automatic HDR alignment in Lightroom didn't work for this sequence, so I exported the sequence with the same settings applied to each image and aligned and merged them manually in Gimp.

A heavenly view of one of our friendly neighborhood planetary nebulas, the Lion Nebula. It's circular in appearance with cometary knots streaming outward from the center, making up the "hair" of the lion's mane. The lion's face is a brightly outlined inner shell that kinda looks like a spaghetti nest with a bright star nestled in the center. Numerous background galaxies are sprinkled around the image, along with a handful of stars. The lion has a blueish mane and a pinkish face with a deep, dark cyan center. The background galaxies are subtly colored with yellows, oranges, and reds. The few stars are more or less white.
