Why can't LA build more affordable housing? Well, you see, because a building located in an R5(CW) zone shall not cast a shadow on a lot located in the R4 or R5 zone for more than two hours each day between the hours of 9AM and 3PM on the Winter Solstice and 9AM and 5PM on the Summer Solstice.
A corrective comment from a zoning review for a 100% affordable housing project in Los Angeles that reads, "BUILDINGS OR STRUCTURES ON A LOT LOCATED WITHIN THE R5(CW) LAND USE CATEGORY SHALL NOT CAST SHADOWS ON A LOT LOCATED IN THE R3 OR R4 ZONE, OR THE R4(CW) OR RC4(CW) LAND USE CATEGORY FOR MORE THAN TWO (2) HOURS EACH DAY BETWEEN THE HOURS F 9 AM AND 3 PM ON THE WINTER SOLSTICE AND 9 AM AND 5 PM ON THE SUMMER SOLSTICE. THE PROJECT APPLICANT SHALL SUBMIT A SHADE.

The California DMV will now revoke someone’s license if they injure someone *after* having *four* DUIs. Our laws were written to protect drivers from any consequences, at the cost of not protecting their victims from death and injury. The right to drive a car may as well be in the constitution.

I think transitioning into Medicare for All, starting with children, is an excellent idea. It’s also exactly what Warren proposed during her presidential run. The very proposal that made people lose their shit and villainize her because a transition plan wasn’t “real” Medicare for All.

I don't think it's a coincidence that there's so much overlap between the Platnerstosslegende crowd and the anti-YIMBYs who insists that a small cabal of financial elites are inflating housing costs. When your political cosmology is fundamentally conspiratorial you always end up in the same place.

TIL that Mohamed Atta was a professional urban planner, of the preservationist nimby persuasion, and that his graduate school thesis was about how high-rises ruin neighborhood character 😳.
Screenshot of the Wikipedia page for 9/11 hijacker Mohamed Atta that reads, “ At the Hamburg University of Technology, Atta studied under the guidance of the department chair, Dittmar Machule, who specialized in the Middle East. 19] Atta was averse to modern development. This included the construction of high-rise buildings in Cairo and other ancient cities in the region. He believed that the drab and impersonal apartment blocks, built in the 60s and 70s, ruined the beauty of old neighborhoods and robbed their people of privacy and dignity.”Screenshot of the Wikipedia page for 9/11 hijacker Mohamed Atta, with a highlighted sentence that reads “He criticized how the newfangled skyscrapers and other modernizing projects disrupted the fabric of communities.”
