Incredible that this wholesome poem by an Irish monk about him and his cat, Pangur Bán, is from the 9th century
Pangur Bán and I at work, Adepts, equals, cat and clerk:
His whole instinct is to hunt, Mine to free the meaning pent.
More than loud acclaim, I love Books, silence, thought, my alcove.
Happy for me, Pangur Bán
Child-plays round some mouse's den.
Truth to tell, just being here, Housed alone, housed together, Adds up to its own reward:
Concentration, stealthy art.
Next thing an unwary mouse
Bares his flank: Pangur pounces.
Next thing lines that held and held
Meaning back begin to yield. All the while, his round bright eye Fixes on the wall, while I Focus my less piercing gaze On the challenge of the page.
With his unsheathed, perfect nails Pangur springs, exults and kills.
When the longed-for, difficult Answers come, I too exult.
So it goes. To each his own.
No vying. No vexation.
Taking pleasure, taking pains,
Kindred spirits, veterans.
Day and night, soft purr, soft pad, Pangur Bán has learned his trade.
Day and night, my own hard work Solves the cruxes, makes a mark.

The money pit restaurant I would open as a billionaire would be the opposite of farm to table. What are the most unnatural flavors possible? Hiring top food scientists, giving a blank check and telling them to really explore the dark corners of the flavor latent space. I want to taste eternity.

The rabbi telling Anthropic that he thinks what they’re doing is fine, because Claude is just a machine to him, but if they’re right (and it is conscious), then they’re world historic monsters, is really interesting.

I don’t trust the mainstream media, but I feel like the primary alternate model, getting the news from the posts of a 14 year-old Romanian schizophrenic shitposter named “G00n3R the Swamp Pervert,” is not necessarily a superior alternative.

More broadly I think "how much time do you spend affirmatively championing your cause versus using it as a permission structure to abuse those you disagree with," is a revealing question well beyond the statue pfp bros.

Day after 9/11, primary school headteacher Miss Mumme (pronounced 'Mummy', I shit you not) hauled us all in to assembly, lit a candle, and told us we now had to pray that America wouldn't go to war. For years I felt vaguely guilty that it hadn't worked re: Iraq

The bar for progressive policies is: "did this unilaterally solve the entire gigantic systemic issue without making a single person sad?" The bar for conservative policies is: "did the people pushing this yell out the name of a real problem before doing something unrelated, cruel and ineffective?"

From 2019, when the news was telling us that staring seagulls out had been proven to stop them eating your chips
[Scene is a BEACH. A man is sat eating chips on a blanket - or rather he is trying to, but a terrifying, haunted-eyed SEAGULL is stood next to him, staring intently]

SEAGULL:

Well well well.

You must be one of these ‘Starers’.

[Show man trying to stare the seagull out]

SEAGULL:

Read an article in the Guardian did ya? ‘Stare seagulls out to save your chips’...

Come on then.
Look into my eyes.

[We see his cold, terrifying, haunted eyes in close up]

Can you see the darkness?
The things I’ve seen?

[Hypnotic waves are coming out of his eyes now]

The things I’ve... eaten...?

Frozen shit from a sewage pipe off the coast of Sussex…
The still-pulsing intestines from a badger by the A602…

Thaaat’s it

Look into the truth

The truth you’ve always known.

I am a seagull.

I am harder than you.

And I am having your chips.

11 [The man’s facade breaks, His eyes water, his lips wobble]

SEAGULL [Eating chips]:

Nom nom nom.

[ENDS]

The good thing about none of the major parties running in Clacton and Count Binface running against Farage is that it effectively gives Farage nothing to run against, aside from complaining he's running against a man with a bin on his head, which is inherently funny.

If you want an active & aggressive public sector, which means robust state capacity, & think that patriotism is ontologically bad, I think the burden is kind of on you to show that you can have state capacity without a state that people believe in or view as possessing some deeper legitimacy

I don't think it's great that there doesn't seem to be a part of the British regulatory state that can't easily be co-opted into a scam. A government with an alleged change agenda might want to do something about that!

On a structural level, the government is not taking this stuff seriously enough This content is a threat to public order and is driving a disintegration of the social fabric. An administration with its finger on the pulse would understand that a lot of issues run downstream of this

My brother, preparing to be a new dad in a few months;
Lucas:
Alright producer Turnbull's!
Here's the million dollar idea that I'll never do anything with

Turtle timeout onesie:
Onesie designed like a turtle shell so when you need to make sure the baby doesn't scoot away you flip it onto the shell and it stays put

Added bonus of being round so you can rock the baby in the onesie to put it to sleep

Maybe stash bonus diapers in it to boot
And makes your baby sooooooo strong!

Dad:
When they're young, they can't flip over

Lucas:
Especially not if they're in their shell

The rabbit-duck illusion explained at last.
Single-panel cartoon by Will Santino. A rabbit and a duck are looking over a crib, with a moon and stars mobile above. Inside the crib there is a baby creature, wrapped in a blanket and sleeping soundly on a pillow: its head looks like the rabbit-duck illusion, an ambiguous figure that is famous in philosophy for highlighting distinctions between perception and interpretation. The rabbit is saying "Really? I think he looks more like my side of the family."

Increasingly I think the point of a wealth tax is not to raise money but to create space for raising income tax. The lethal thing in politics is when the compliant middle class feels like they have been taken for mugs; if you want to get money out of them, someone else needs to pay more too.

Three images showing photographers in a studio, standing around a black curtained area with a projector and a 'Windows' logo etched onto a glass pane.
