Ignoring the ethical considerations from the journalists’ side, Xbox under Sharma is clearly running a very effective comms operation - exactly what you’d want from a CEO dropped in to clean up It also stands in stark relief to the foot-in-mouth disease that seems to plague other gaming executives

At this point I would honestly prefer that the UK authorities said nothing on this than they kept dribbling out cryptic clues like it's a murder mystery evening. "What if I told you one of them rang 999 himself?" "We've bailed them, but it's still Iran, what might that mean?" Not. Helpful.

This is the root of the guttural distain many feel towards AI: These companies are trying to replace things that the public *don't want to replace* People love art, culture and media - why would they want a shitty simulacrum instead? And why would they thank a company for giving them it?

I'm going to need a bit more from the government than 'repeat what we've already announced' on internet and social media regulation

Everything to come out of Brittin's mouth thus far has been a massive red flag Even if you *think* this, why would you be stupid enough to say it, given the role you currently occupy?

I'd argue that the current media ecosystem is largely built around presenting a few dozen people as a 'movement' That's being driven by a mixture of financial incentives (wanting to cover a trend/discourse) and ignorance (some newsrooms not realising how content algos work)

Rhetorically I agree with this, but I'm not confident the UK has the stomach for this kind of fight Our track record in dealing with poorly-behaving tech titans isn't exactly stellar, as it currently stands

This divergence has become particularly acute in areas of London typically considered 'prime' real estate In Kensington/Chelsea/Fulham, you're currently looking at 1/3 markdown in value, compared with 3-5 years ago

Hilariously, this runs counter to the approach a lot of newsrooms have shifted to, which is to focus on high-return specialists who can create USPs for the publication A deeply unwise approach

Mind-blowing story in Private Eye about how the Telegraph's chief reporter reached out to James Orr (or meant to) after the Channel 4 donation revelations

...within hours of journalists on either the *Guardian* or *Sunday Times* contacting Reform for comment on the same stories ahead of them publishing their own investigations. Reform deputy leader Richard Tice and his fiancée, supposed journalist Isabel Oakeshott, even crowed online about their spoiler tactics.

Not that the *Telegraph* doesn't do its own leg work when reporting on Reform. After James Orr, the party's head of policy, had to resign after a sting by *Channel 4 News* (see "*Right Orr Wrong*, p14"), *Telegraph* chief reporter Rob Mendick texted Orr: "I was hoping to talk to you entirely on background," he schmoozed. "You must be feeling very bruised and I totally Appreciate [sic] the sensitivities. I suspect you deserve better and I wanted to see how I can put the record straight in some way." Alas, instead of the Reformer and Cambridge theologian, Mendick messaged someone else, who shared it with the *Eye*!

On a more serious note: The government's 'praise in public, punish in private' approach to dealing with anti-migration rioters has clearly failed Very visibly cracking down on these attempts at stoking disorder *will* having a chilling effect

Two thoughts on this: 1) you can’t typically rely on a Force Majeure clause prospectively - you do need the event which frustrated or halted performance to have actually happened 2) You do have some control over which events you include in that clause So what event is Oracle citing here?

In much the same way that Jonathan Haidt's 'diagnosis' that "it's the phones" was damagingly oversimplistic, Gray's attempted antidote (in my view) runs into the same issue - you're dealing with a confluence of social and technological factors, which is why it presents as a cross-cultural issue

"Chants of 'let them drown' sung by a child over a megaphone" surely must be the moment this UK Government realises that no form of appeasement or persuasion is going to solve this problem. Ban the platforms spreading the lies, proscribe the groups terrorising the country. Act now, for pity's sake.

A key point: you do need a theory of communication, alongside a theory of politics, to be an effective operator I think the centre and left struggle, generally, with "playing the game" - it's not enough to just have policy prescriptions you think will work
