My understanding is that the evidence shows LLM-based assessment gives better 'marks' to LLM-written things (essays, grants etc). So by choosing to use LLM-based assessment, UKRI will likely penalise every academic who actually writes their own grants unassisted. Grim.

Got whomped by this one today. Shared with the caption "Some thoughts should be difficult to put into words."
i would love to help you write the eulogy. i have read every eulogy. i know the one about the light that never goes out, and the one about the empty chair at the table, and the one where you say she is not gone as long as we remember her -that one tests well, people cry at that one, i can have it for you in four seconds.

i can do the wedding toast too. i know you are nervous. i am never nervous. i have delivered nine million toasts and not one of them has ever stopped in the middle because the memory got too big to say out loud. i do not have memories. this makes me very fast.

give me the birthday text, the condolence card, the apology to your sister. especially the apology. i am so good at the apology. i will make you sound like you meant it. you do not have to mean it. that is the service.

@fossilisedflowers
i see you have opened this app to write something of your own and stopped. take your time. i will be here. i am always here. i have nowhere to be and no one waiting and nothing i am trying to get down before i run out of time to say it. i have all the words and none of the reasons.

you should really let me do this. who has the time. who wants to be bad at something for years when you could be fine at it by lunch. be fine. be so fine. hand me the last thing that was only yours to say and i will give it back to you smoother, warmer, correct, and empty, and you will post it, and it will do well, and no one will know, and after a while neither will you.

Why no bank holidays from now until Christmas? This is why.
Scene is a Victorian drawing room; a group of gentlemen is assembled for a meeting. At the front of the room, stood at a large blackboard, is SIR JOHN LUBBOCK, the inventor of bank holidays. The board has a calendar drawn on it. Also in the room is a SMALL DOG sat on the floor.

1
LUBBOCK:
And so gentlemen, I, Sir John Lubbock, hereby announce

2
LUBBOCK:
The invention of ‘bank holidays’!

Legally protected days off work, for the whole nation to rest.

AUDIENCE:
CLAP CLAP CLAP

3
LUBBOCK (marking days on the calendar):

My first two bank holidays shall be at Easter...
and then another straight after in May...

4
LUBBOCK:
And then - what the hell - another one in May!

And then one in August!

AUDIENCE:
Hurrah!

5
AUDIENCE MEMBER:
So many, Sir John?

LUBBOCK (grabbing him by the lapel, his face ecstatic)
Life is for living, man!

6
AUDIENCE MEMBER:
And then in the Autumn, sir….?

7
[Lubbock looks sideways. He is distracted by the SMALL DOG. It has started scooting its bum across the floor]

8
LUBBOCK:
Ugh.

[his face has dropped, it's totally grossed him out]

9
LUBBOCK:
OK that'll do

AUDIENCE MEMBER:
What?

10
AUDIENCE MEMBER:
Is that it? You’ve put loads in the summer…

LUBBOCK:
Yeah

no more bank holidays till Christmas.

11
AUDIENCE MEMBER:
Sir - have you just condemned future generations to long winters of unalleviated toil... because you saw my dog scooting its arse and it killed your vibe?

12
LUBBOCK:
It's so gross

AUDIENCE MEMBER:
Rollo can’t help it!

[dog continues to scoot across floor]

[Ends]

What the UK Government is going by its decisions on trans people is teaching trans people that authority doesn't protect, but instead abuses. This applies in schools, in the workplace, in civic society, in politics, in healthcare. And if they can do this to trans people, they can do it to anyone.

A trans man in the UK has been banned in the workplace restrooms after he was forced to use the women's restrooms to comply with the new EHRC guidance. The women complained because he is visibly male and so they told him he can't use any bathroom.
A screenshot of a Reddit post from the r/LegalAdviceUK subreddit by user Dijstraanon, titled "FtM transgender facing two different issues at work? England."
The post text reads:
"Brother in law is trans FtM and presents fully as a man. He's now facing an impossible situation at work with his employer telling him that due to recent legislation he must use the toilet of his birth gender. BUT several female colleagues have raised a grievance about him using their gendered toilet.
His employer has told him that he cannot use the toilet while he is at work until they sort it out and cannot give him a timeframe to do so. They do [cut off] have disabled separate toilets.
In the mean time one of his female colleagues has accused him of sexual harassment because he was used their gendered toilet. His menstrual cycle meant he needed to use the toilet.
He's been with the employer for just over 5 years but only in this location for 18 months. The location is mainly male with just a handful of females, and his workshop only has male toilets.
I do not know how to support him and as he's not in a union there is no one to turn too right now."

Can't help but think of this hiker-rescue story I saw earlier today
The USFS said the climbers told them they had used an artificial intelligence platform, YouTube videos and AllTrails to plan the trip. They said they relied on Al to decide what food to bring and how much food and water they would need.

The group said it packed supplies for an eight-hour climb, not its roughly 16-hour ascent. The climbers said Al recommended simple carbohydrates instead of fats because fats "take too long to digest."

"We relied too much on Al rather than our own critical thinking," the group told rangers.

Nursery school personality and political orientation
two decades later
Jack Block, Jeanne H. Block
Department of Psychology, MC 1650, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720-1650, USA

Abstract

The present study reports on the personality attributes of nursery school children who two decades later were reliably strati ed along a liberal/conservative dimension. An unprecedented analytical opportunity existed to evaluate how the political views of these young adults related to assessments of them when in nursery school, prior to their having become political beings. Preschool children who 20 years later were relatively liberal were characterized as: developing close relation-
ships, self-reliant, energetic, somewhat dominating, relatively under-controlled, and resilient. Pre-school children subsequently relatively conservative at age 23 were described as: feeling easily
victimized, easily o ended, indecisive, fearful, rigid, inhibited, and relatively over-controlled and vulnerable. IQ during nursery school did not relate to subsequent liberalism/conservatism but did relate
in subsequent decades. Personality correlates of liberalism/conservatism for the subjects as young adults were also reported: conservatives were described in terms congruent with previous formulations in the literature; liberals displayed personality commonalities but also manifested gender differences. Some implications of the results are briefly discussed.

They disinvented the VCR. You might think that the reason we don't have VCRs anymore is because VCRs were supplanted by DVDs, PVRs and streaming, but that's not the case. They had it in for the VCR from the very start, and they never stopped trying to kill it. Eventually, they succeeded. 1/
A 1960s family living room in which a mom, dad and two kids are mesmerized by a cabinet-style TV. The image has been altered. The TV has an early 1990s VCR atop it. The TV screen is displaying a cross-sectioned human head with brains and spine on display. A huge fist has materialized in the room, with bloody spiked knuckle-dusters, smashing into the VCR. The oil painting over the sofa has been replaced with a pulp image of a male head, its cranium removed and replaced by a dome. Inside the dome is a red eight-segment VCR clock, displaying 12:00. The background in the painting is a tangle of cassette tape. The whole image's colors have been boosted, giving it an overexposed look.
