The Puffin social media team wanted me to make a video to promote The Far-Out Five book two but I've just got three new kittens. Please share this video so I can spend more time playing with Ponyo (and the other two) and less time plugging an incredibly funny graphic novel series for 7-11 year olds.

The momentum of this issue is in the wrong direction. The line should be: We're roasting, we're exposed to wildfires, we're experiencing drought, and these nutters aren't prepared to keep British people safe.

11/ Adaptation has limits. Her environmental offer is flood defences and resilience. The IPCC finds hard limits already reached in some ecosystems, and limits that can be surpassed, producing losses and damages. Defences buy time, so fund them properly. They don't substitute for cutting emissions.

Time and again climate change is treated as though it were binary: we cannot prevent it, so ok, it’s there let’s embrace it. That’s entirely wrong: it is a sliding scale. We cannot prevent 1.5 degrees. But maybe 3? Or 5?

If I can, let me explain today's Times story. This is less to do with renewables and much more to do with where generation is located and how it shows up at a system level. /1

The whole daily mean UK CET record. 1st and 99th %iles computed, then plotting how many days per year (within each decade) do days <1st %ile and >99th %ile occur. This allows analysis of the occurrence of the extremes), styled like the population pyramids I remember from GSCE Geography. #RStats
Met Office Hadley Centre Daily Mean Central England Temperature dataset, 1st and 99th percentiles computed, and then their occurrence per year within each decade plotted in the style of a population pyramid.

Through time, this shows a marked decrease in the occurrences in extreme cold, and in the most recent few decades a marked increase of the extreme hot days.

The problem, as with so many things, is Trump. I'm gonna do a little thread on this because people don't seem to be aware. 1/x

Holiday advice: It's pleasant to get a train to Europe. You just have to turn travelling into a core part of the holiday - lunch in Paris, dinner in Bordeaux, trip to Spain, week on beach etc. It's limiting, but very enjoyable & decent alternative to a flight you won't be able to afford by summer.

This is just nonsense. If you accept climate change is happening and a problem (as Kemi supposedly does) then net zero (i.e. stopping adding more anthropogenic GHG into the atmosphere) is the only way to stop it. The alternative is denying well over 100 years of established physics

Our economies need energy to run. Wind and solar are cheap, abundant sources of energy. They will never run out. They are almost miracles. Whichever country dominates in turbines and solar PV will become the most economically important. Right now, that's China.

Data centers use 2% of the world’s electricity. There’s a *huge* push to build more for AI. But even the most optimistic growth paths for AI predict it’ll drive less growth in energy demand than electric cars or aircon. It’s significant, but it’s not the biggest thing going on.
