It's nice to be at Making Active Places. I'm proud to sit on ATE's technical advisory group, but it's always fascinating to see the different facets of professional transport practice that go into active travel.

Annual service for my beloved Frankenbike. <£150 in costs for the year, taking me to savings across its lifetime of nearly £25,000. ...and tell me, how much does your car cost you?

My head feels like it's in a vice ahead of the storm. Years ago, the partner of a relative was heard pooh-poohing someone saying storm headaches aren't a thing Ever since the joke in our house is: I have a stormy head. No you dont, because X says they're made up.

Today's exercise has been putting this second shelf up (1950s bricks are no joke!), and now some physio exercises to try and put my back back together.

There's an "easy" solution to this (other than not banning them, obvs). The Queensway tunnel *will* support a permanent bike lane. I know, because it was suggested as part of the Covid EATF work we did. It was at least considered but I don't know exactly why it was ignored. Suspect air quality

Most academics get the spam emails from "journals"/"conferences" that piggyback a paper you've done to try and show they've engaged with your work. Bizarrely, in the last year or so I've had several using this paper, which is nothing to do with me. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

I had a dream where I was being interviewed for a Chair. Then instead of the committee, Ben Affleck turned up and told me my movie pitch idea wasn't good, and had me workshop a tv show. Then the next day as I was prepared to do an hour record attempt they said i had to do, they made me chair.

We've been staying in Llandudno the last few days. I like it here, but one thing that keeps sticking out to me given the older demographic here is how inaccessible it is. On the high street there's not many controlled crossing points, few refuges, and places impossible to cross in a wheelchair.

Every (Ewery?) morning we've been woken up by sheep that have wandered in from somewhere. What's great is we're literally one street over from the high street so they've bimbled right into the middle of town.

I don't think there's one silver bullet for the high street, but even if there was I don't think it's pubs. Since we moved i don't think I've ever been in our 'local' - other than for an emergency loo with the child. They're important for communities, but I'm not concinved they're the lynchpin.

In our research we noted that one of the flaws of the 15 minute city idea is that you can't really make the private sector open a business it doesn't want to. Labour are going to give it the old college try, though. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

The good news, as I write to the hum of the dehumidifier, is that I've got a first draft done just in time for the out of office to go on for a fortnight. So that can percolate for a bit. And there's rain due in next week, so... you're welcome.

Whilst it's sad I'm not surprised by this. There is case upon case where drivers who kill barely even get a short ban (before we even get to the merits and demerits of prison). Plus, the roads have been barely policed since austerity and it shows. www.theguardian.com/law/2026/aug...

I was explaining to the eldest that the last eclipse was 30ish years ago, and there won't be another like it until she's in her late 60s. She asked me, how old will you be? 👀 Very old* (Mid 90s for the next partial, or one hundred and dead for the next totality.)

There's two basic responses to this 1) Parents saying yeah we did go a bit mad, didn't we. 2) People who really need to go outside for a bit.

When we studied 15/20 minute cities, we found that most of Liverpool was functionally a 15 minute city. The difference was that Allerton had a greengrocer, fishmonger, butcher, baker (but no candlestick maker) + Tesco. Bootle met the criteria with an Iceland. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

With the child in a situation where I need to procure an emergency tea. Go to the shop, which doesn't sell ham sandwiches. They do sell ham, and bread. Me: if I just buy the ham, her mum will kill me. Ten minutes later: no prizes for guessing who's ate the ham and left the bread.
