I tell you what makes forecasting difficult... ignoring the leading indicators that matter, believing the often 100% wrong models in economic textbooks, relying on vibe surveys, and having blind faith in the business cycle (it's gone down so it will come up)

There are those among us who believe that the answer to all manner of challenges is investing more in kiwisaver, pension funds, savings etc. Kiwi households are nearly top of the world at the wealth accumulation thing folks - not you? Ah, maybe you can spot the real issue then?!? [1/3]

The Post is running one of those 'ignore the austerity hyperbole' stories. A few things to note... 1. The article uses unadjusted figures throughout. If you adjust the $ for inflation and population, Govt operating expenditure in 2026/27 is below 2023/24 levels (by $144 per capita), and.... [🧵 1/n]

The only press a group like this should get is questions about its funding and the usual suspect ghouls behind it, especially in the wake of dirty work. But as usual the NZ press is too afraid of losing access to do anything other than print verbatim press releases, ask soft questions

The media when the right smear Green MPs: anonymous sources have raised serious questions that must be addressed and they should resign The media when Nicky Hager writes a book using sources from inside the TPU: obviously these anonymous sources mean we should dismiss this immediately

Nicky Hager book is unusual because its main thesis seems to be "they are just doing all this bad faith money-for-racism stuff in plain sight and the media don't seem to perceive it as bad" Media: "Hmm this Hager book has no revelations in it, we knew all this already, oh well carry on as normal"

Have the Labour Party been paying any attention during this current term of Parliament? This is delusional thinking.
“The Select Committee process will provide all Kiwis to with the chance to have their say. The Bill is not perfect and undoubtedly can be improved. We particularly want to make sure the proposed safety nets don’t do more harm than good,” Labour science, technology and innovation spokesperson Reuben Davidson said.

there are no 'correct' grounds for being a socialist to people with a vested interest in defending the capitalist order. if you're poor, you're lazy. if you're middle class, you're envious. if you're wealthy, you're hypocritical. it's all a goalpost-moving shell game.

Can we piss off with this “slashing debt” bullshit? We’re not a broke country. Our debt levels are far from unserviceable. We are, however, a country with serious deficit in infrastructure maintenance. Why can’t we address that? It’s far cheaper than continuously kicking the can down the road.

If a man told me he takes risks at his job, I would find that relatable before ultimately laughing in his face if he explained he sat at a desk and played with someone else’s money all day.
"Whether they want to admit it or not, many women have always been attracted to bad boys and risk-takers,
" said Jordi Hays, a co-host of
the technology industry talk show TBPN. "I can't think of any archetype of man that fits that description more today than capital allocators that put it all on the line every day in the markets."
