Ministers drop plans to cut jury trials in England and Wales after outcry
Critics say scrapping of plans, which aimed to increase judge-alone trials to deliver swifter justice, leaves court system and victims vulnerable Ministers have scrapped plans that would have slashed the number of jury trials in England and Wales and replaced them with a judge sitting alone. The proposals had sparked a fierce backlash from lawyers, who have welcomed the U-turn. But the victims’ commissioner expressed concern about the abandonment of measures drawn up by the then justice secretary, David Lammy, under Keir Starmer’s government, to tackle the record backlog in the courts. It’s not just ‘troubling’, it’s a breach of s 17(2) of the Public Records Act, which is an offence under s 61 of that Act. Parties promising to ‘strengthen the OIA’ must face the fact that the Chief Archivist can’t or won’t do the job of ensuring compliance, & transfer it to an Info Commissioner.

Looking through some old stuff and found this cartoon I cut out c1996. They just never really have new ideas, just new packaging. (For younger readers - right wing think tank the NZ Initiative formed out of a merger of the NZ Business Roundtable and the NZ Institute in 2012.)
Photo of a black and white cartoon with a bunch of men sitting around an executive board table. A sign in front reads “Quiet please, Roundtable in session”. From left to right they are saying:
“The govt should get out of education and health…”
“We need more contestability in social welfare…”
“the govt should sell ACC and the post office…”
“We should privatise electricity and roading…”
“Seen the polls? Winston could be the next PM”
“That’s disgraceful. What happened to the New Zealand we all knew and loved?”

Apparently good economic management involves increasing unemployment until one in six young people are out of work, poor, and increasingly disenfranchised. Is this 'building the future'? Would 'fixing the basics' not involve fixing this disaster?

As yet another agency’s OIA failings actually reveal that they’re constantly committing offences under the Public Records Act, it’s time for an Information Commissioner who can investigate and enforce both the OIA and PRA. Last year’s review of Tasmania’s law recommended this. #nzpol

Like, I'm not an expert on this by any means, but in the same way you can't really disentangle the US criminal justice system from modern slavery, I don't think you can meaningfully separate the death penalty from lynching. It exists as an institution to legally perpetuate racial violence.

Last council elections there were quite a few candidates elected unopposed around the country. I'd like a system where the nomination period is extended if there's only one candidate by the normal deadline. So many people think "I'm sure someone will run, I don't need to" and then it's too late.
