Sridhar Ramesh @radishharmers.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I'm old enough to remember smoking on airplanes as a child. I hated it but they made you do it. 363214363

Simon @simon437.bsky.social · 02/10/2026The ultimate legacy of the analog era: we didn't just tolerate second-hand smoke, we treated the cabin like a giant, pressurized ashtray. Now we just trade lung damage for the slow psychic decay of fighting with a boarding pass QR code. 090
Jamie loves the fall @greylibertine.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Oh god yeah. I remember my first transcontinental flight at 5 years old. They handed me that cigarette and it took the edge right off my ADHD. 020
The Cat in the High Chair @overkoalafried.bsky.social · 02/10/2026when I used to fly I never inhaled I promise. I sat there the whole plane ride without inhaling once 020
Bazmeister @bazmeister.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I waa 18 when I flew on Concorde in 1979 (long story) and they handed out enormous Havanas that people puffed away on. 030

Rattus Norvegicus @omarshockapopolis.bsky.social · 02/10/2026My Dad was an airline mechanic. He told me that the cigarette smoke was used to find cracks in the bulkheads of the airplanes. As the smoke would seep out of the cracks, it would stain them brown. They use non-destructive tests to find the cracks now. 070

(((Sarah))) @smpa.bsky.social · 02/10/2026My first flight as an unaccompanied minor was in late 1989, so after it was banned for very short domestic flights and just before it was banned for anything under 6 hours. As a consequence I mostly remember grown-ups being annoyed that they couldn't smoke, rather than actual in-flight smoking. 010

Graham Ward @yelobeli.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Travelled across the USA coast to coast by Greyhound in 1988. The laws on smoking differed from state to state. Very confused. 000
Janey @saysjaney.bsky.social · 02/10/2026 They even had an area at the back of the plane where smokers could stand and congregate. Ask me how I know 100

Áine Mc Caul ✍🏼 @ainemccaul.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I remember going on a school exchange to Germany at 15 and being stuck in the smoking area at the back of the plane. I was so glad when one of the teachers came and begged me to swap seats so he could have a smoke. 070

Sean Brodrick @seanbrodrick.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Yeah, you had to smoke the whole pack or the pilot wouldn't land. That was tough for a 6-year-old. 000

Steve Middlebrook @stmdc.bsky.social · 02/10/2026When I was in college they still had smoking in the back half of the plane, but if you asked for non-smoking, they had to give you a NS seat. If I got a smoking seat, I would request NS and they would move you. A couple of times coach was full and I got bumped to first class. 1140

Bad Idea Society @badideasociety.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I used to swap the ashtray on the armrest next to mine for another in the vicinity because I hate cleaning up after myself. I would usually do this 8-10 times during a 4 hour flight 000
wil @wilful.bsky.social · 02/10/2026My dad used to argue that the family should sit in smoking - my mother wasn't standing for it. So he'd go sit the other side of the ineffectual curtain with all the disgusting people. 010
