Nothing was beautiful and everything hurt
Nothing was beautiful and everything hurt
Joyce Carol Oates was tearing into Elon Musk and we were all having a good laugh about that. Get his ass etc. The basic gist of it was something I've often said about politics-poisoned posting-addicts. People who have never not even once shared their enthusiasm for a band or a book they like or literally anything they might like at all if such a thing exists. The lamentations of their enemies does not count.

There are so many people like that. Even people on your side.

Can you imagine – I don't know whatever asshole you're thinking of right now – posting a picture of the ocean or a beautiful landscape that they took? A big game hunting safari also does not count. Or about a movie that they enjoyed? In aesthetic terms I mean not as part of the culture war.

One of the great pleasures in life is sharing something beautiful with others.
Sharing art isn't quite the same as creating it in the first place but it's akin to it in that you are making it exist for others who might not have known of it otherwise. You are also at the same time making yourself known. It's an act of kindness and generosity and vulnerability. Please look at a photograph of this rushing mountain stream I stumbled across on my hike. You can’t tell at first but if you look really closely I'm in there and so are you.

I recognize the pain of thinking if I could only talk to them one more time.
A chat request from a late friend
I recognize the pain of thinking if I could only talk to them one more time. It is among the more familiar human laments. But that's just the thing it is a human emotion not a technological problem. Our capacity for loss – in fact the necessity of losing and having lost – is what makes us who we are. There is no workaround. There will be no workaround. And every attempted step toward preventing that or perverting that is an affront to our humanity. Why not just taxidermy nana and prop her up at the Texas Chainsaw Massacre dinner table? At least there's something real and tangible about that. An undeniable sacrilege. You should have to smell the dead when you disinter them.

Look, if Mona wants to play the “illiberal and bigoted old statements mean you have no place in the Democratic Party” then pack your bags, you old bat
Reid used the word "Negro." It's out of date, but is it now offensive? Is it the new "N" word? Just a blink of an eye ago, "black" was the preferred locution. Jesse Jackson decided it should be
"African-American" and the country went along.
But the slower adopters (even your humble columnist, who prefers less orotund expressions) sometimes still say "black." How long until that becomes a sin?
As for Obama being light-skinned, it's certainly possible that his complexion made him more acceptable to some vestigial racists. For Reid to notice that is not to endorse it. And finally, the president's lack of a "Negro dialect, unless he wants one," was clearly an important asset. Most Americans expect their president to speak standard English. Black (there I go again) speech in America ranges from James Earl Jones to gangsta rap, and it was clearly an advantage that Obama was articulate. When he chooses to adopt a black style, he does it a whole lot more authentically than Hillary Clinton managed in her embarrassing South Carolina appearance at a black (did it again) church. Remember "I ain't noways tired"?

@cd_hooks What to look for on election night in the
#TXSen Dem primary: 1) Votes. The more each candidate gets, the better. And that's likely to determine the
winner of the entire ballgame. 2) The map. Votes from outside Texas aren't likely to count at all-unless they were mailed

It's no wonder then that so many of us want these humans simply disappeared. And they are humans in case you need reminding. They aren't a threat so much as they are an indictment. Look at what we allow. orbooks.com/catalog/we-h...
Look at what we allow
They said he threw his jacket. Kept saying that over and
over. The man was agitated on the subway and he threw
his jacket. I don’t know what that means. I understand
the basic physics of the action being described mind
you and I understand why they would immediately
start printing something like that in the newspapers
because I guess in theory it suggests aggression that
begged for a response. Not the one it got but still.
He threw his jacket they said. Kept saying. I don’t
know what that means.
Try throwing a jacket right now. What have
you done? Nothing. Tom Brady could not throw a
jacket especially hard. You couldn’t hurt a person
by throwing a jacket. You couldn’t even hurt a small
animal. Throwing your jacket on top of one is what
you would do to specifically not hurt a bird that has
gotten into your house. So you could carry it gently
back outside. So that it could go on living.
The man’s killer was a marine which triggered
the media to use the same exonerative tense that they
always use for cops. The most lethal among us always
also the most blameless.
How people make excuses for certain breeds
of dogs.
That hierarchical framing shows up a lot in
bicyclist vs. driver stories and in the common use of
homeowner as an honorific in a crime story and most
112
especially in any normal citizen vs. homeless person
story which is what this was.
Not just one specific group of normal citizens vs.
one specific homeless person but all of them vs. all
of them.
And it’s a Thursday in May and a man is dead. Do
you feel any safer?
I guess this one isn’t fiction. You and I are just
talking here.
I told you before that I know it can be uncomfortable
to encounter an unhoused person in distress but that
is because it is an up close and personal look at How
It Actually Is. A peek under the hood of this country.
The churning gears and foul combustion. It’s no
wonder then that so many of us want these humans
simply disappeared. And they are humans in case you
n…You told me about something you learned in
school. A professor said that one of the things that
helped people accept their work as concentration
camp guards was that the terrible conditions of the
camps themselves made the prisoners’ literal filth
synonymous with their inherent filthiness. If they
weren’t dirty then they wouldn’t be this dirty.
It applies to modern prison guards and the ICE
kidnappers as well. Look at this worm living in the
wormhole. Writhing in its own muck.
Doing it to offend my sense of decency come to
think of it. A personal insult to me.
Will no one rid me of these insects?
Let me ask you something. Take a quick inventory
of your life. Like mine it’s currently a mostly
comfortable and safe one right? But be honest with
yourself. Do you feel closer to the chasm of poverty
with perhaps a devastating medical bill or an eviction
or a ruinous encounter with the police or a worsening
struggle with addiction or closer to the attainment of
wealth and power?
Which end of the see-saw are you actually
sitting on?
