Someone wishes for the good old days and the monkeys paw has decided we should do: (1) a 1970s oil crisis (2) a 1990s tech cycle (3) a 2010s eurozone debt crisis All at once.

The future Grand Paris Express station Villejuif - Gustave Roussy is a masterpiece. It connects metro line 14 (already operating) to the future line 15 in this massive station. I counted a total of 24 escalators. It was eerily quiet since it’s not yet an interchange station.

Such an assumption speaks to a deep paranoia that permeates the right, unable to believe in artistic choices, seeing only cultural-political plots. But if either Christianity or the West rests on the film adaptation of a prequel book from a 75-year-old children’s series, we have bigger problems.

This is spectacular, folks. We live in a moment in American history when the president and his administration are so racist and dumb that a toy company has to put out a statement saying: "OUR GIANT ROBOT THAT TURNS INTO A TRUCK DENOUNCES RACISM AND HAS NO CONNECTION TO THE CURRENT PRESIDENT."

2) and 3) are intimately linked, in that the BBC (the organisation that really matters in the modern environment) treats 'claims by rival parties' as the operating frame for how it covers everything. The failure from Labour and the Conservatives to say 'this stuff is bad' is really, really bad.

one of the UK's peculiarities is that the *law* - last updated in 1998 - mandates a collective daily act of worship "wholly or mainly of a broad Christian character' in state schools unless the school explicitly opts out or has another religious mandate. But the law just isn't enforced.

The most disturbing assumption in my feed is that a chunk of those at the Dover “protest” today were police officers, or their mates. As well as dealing with far-right agitators, the government needs to address this lack of confidence in the police

Political funding is too concentrated, and we can see large donors buy influence. Most of Reform’s funding has come from donations over £100k. In 2023, nearly a third of all money given to political parties came from nine sources. We need donation caps, so politics can be shaped by voters instead.

Well, what I always say, "I just want everybody to be treated good." I try not to get into the politics of everything. I try to get into the human element of it. I have some of everybody in my own immediate family and in my circle of employees. I've got transgender people. I've got gays. I've got lesbians. I've got drunks. I've got drug addicts — all within my own family. I know and love them all, and I do not judge.

And I just see how broken-hearted they get over certain things and I know how real they are. I know how important this is to them. That's who they are. They cannot help that any more than I can help being Dolly Parton, you know, the way people know me. If there's something to be judged, that is God's business. But we are all God's children and how we are is who we are.

I cannot see a dead fish as a "conservation success". Bluefin tuna are still rare - they only avoid being technically endangered cos they stabilised at a tiny number. That's not a healthy population, just a stable one. Let them breed and really do well before you fish for them if you have to.

The tactic of sharing a list of houses is straight out of the NI paramilitaries handbook and its spread to England is troubling. The police should really be looking to prosecute anybody sharing it with all the conspiracy and aiding and abetting charges they can think of.

The Guardian once asked me 'what one change would you make to achieve Black equality in Britain?' and it feels appropriate to share my answer again
Athena Kugblenu: Allow Black people to be mediocre too!
Athena Kugblenu
I would like to replace #blackexcellence with #blackmediocrity. True equality is when our talent:recognition ratio is allowed to be as broad as white people’s. Lewis Hamilton had to win two Formula One titles before he bagged BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2014; Greg Rusedski only had to get battered by Pat Rafter to win his. Kwasi Kwarteng steered the economy towards an iceberg and got sacked. Jeremy Hunt drove the NHS over a cliff, now he’s chancellor. Don’t get me started on how many football clubs get ruined by freshly retired white footballers while very qualified Black managers are overlooked. When the arc of the moral universe bends towards Black people failing upwards as their peers do, we will be in the promised land.
