@tomgauld.bsky.social is always witty, almost always funny and, occasionally, cutting. But this one is really painful to me. Too much truth Tom 😪

I do think basically being mean or inconsiderate to AI tools is bad just because it makes you more likely to behave that way to real people and that in and of itself is enough. It's the same as when people come back from Dubai.

I always turn You and Yours off the moment it comes on, but it is EXACTLY the sort of show that a public broadcaster should be making. Because, guess what, none of Global or Netflix or Disney or Sky are going to pick up a consumer rights programme like that, despite its obvious public good.

New: UK already generates enough scrap steel to support a major expansion in domestic steelmaking Every year we export around 8M tonnes of scrap steel while importing higher-value steel products from overseas Why does UK face ticking clock to capture Britain's green steel boom? 🧵

This ancient Greek figure from the 2,500 year-old Douris Cup looks uncannily like someone working on a laptop! 😲 💻 He’s actually writing with a stylus on a hinged wax writing tablet! The technology has changed, the posture has not! 😂 Altes Museum, Berlin 📷 by me
My photo shows detail from an ancient Greek red-figure kylix (drinking cup) of a young man shown in profile seated on a stool facing right. He wears a knee length cloak (himation) over his left shoulder, which is shown in folds around his waist and upper legs. His right shoulder, chest, and arms are bare. His dark hair is short, and he wears a band around his head. He is looking down at an open rectangular wax writing tablet which he is supporting in his left hand above his lap. In his right hand he holds a metal stylus pen poised over the writing tablet. The wooden writing tablet is hinged like a book and, from this angle, resembles a modern laptop. The figure is part of a scene depicting school lessons in ancient Athens, painted by Douris around 480 BC. On display at the Altes Museum in Berlin.

There are apparently fig trees(!) in Sheffield & here's the Sheffield Tribune's explanation of how they got there: There really is no place called "Away"... everything comes from somewhere and everything goes somewhere.
"They owe their existence to Sheffielders of the past’s fondness for fig biscuits, with the seeds that passed through their digestive system finding their way to Meadowhall. There, germinated by the regular hot discharges from the area’s steel mills, they grew into the forest of urban figs you see today."

From a personal perspective, there is a current issue with the state, but it isn’t overreach - which would be the Thatcherite claim. It is that doesn’t work: water regulation, HS2 overspend, NHS waiting lists and far too many potholes in the roads. I don’t want less/more state; I want a better state

About 30 years ago I remember someone describing Cambridgeshire’s traffic policy, particularly as applied to Cambridge, as being designed to get the Tory Councillors’ 4x4s from their house in the country to Lion Yard as quickly as possible. It sounds like Hampshire’s might still be of that sort.

What I remember about it is, when watching on the TV for the first time, how unfunny it was, but talking about it the playground the following morning it became funnier and funnier, as people quoted, misremembered and played with the jokes in it

The future Grand Paris Express station Villejuif - Gustave Roussy is a masterpiece. It connects metro line 14 (already operating) to the future line 15 in this massive station. I counted a total of 24 escalators. It was eerily quiet since it’s not yet an interchange station.

I work in safety-critical software/systems. I spend time thinking about the application of AI to this area. Personally, I think it can make such systems better and safer, but the key, for me, is doing it in such a way that we maintain accountability to identifiable people.

As the manager of a software development department, we had a project manager who had a terrible record of overruns, overspends and unhappy clients. He was the guy put into sort out the shit. (I have no idea about the filmmaker, but sometimes, as you say, a bad record isn’t necessarily indicative)

A film that had the budget were a green screen fell over *and they had to leave it in* might have led to a creativity explosion and a great film. (Not really a comment on your joke; just back to the too much money can damage creativity trope)

We get canvassed quite regularly in our current location, but only council elections, as our ward is competitive, but not for general elections, as the constituency is currently, pretty-solid Labour

Such an assumption speaks to a deep paranoia that permeates the right, unable to believe in artistic choices, seeing only cultural-political plots. But if either Christianity or the West rests on the film adaptation of a prequel book from a 75-year-old children’s series, we have bigger problems.

Interestingly, the opposite can happen. I recently went to look at the Impressionists in the Fitzwilliam, Cambridge, and they had rearranged it from my last visit. I first felt a little lost, but, after a while sat reading, became aware of a beautiful, new painting. I will be visiting it again

I expect you know more about this than me, so I will feel less optimistic. (Not that I was that optimistic, as I feel the wrong side is the one with the money to fight cases)

Tenison Blue @tenisonblue.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
My point is that the ruling is *legally* narrow (practically, is a different matter). As such, it leaves plenty of things open (with some, in my view, hints, cf the Court’s comments on trans-rights) It is these open issues that further cases could resolve, not its “original sin”

Tenison Blue @tenisonblue.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
We are down to disagreeing on language. I am not trying to say the judgement doesn’t lead to issues, that I, and, I take from your responses, you would wish wouldn’t happen. I am saying that the judgement is not incoherent
100
Tenison Blue @tenisonblue.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
A problem is that one side has money and the other doesn’t. We need some cases to taken to the Supreme Court to tidy this all up, but the good guys don’t have the money. Or better would be for Parliament to sort it
200
Tenison Blue @tenisonblue.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
It may be immoral and cruel, but I don’t think it’s incoherent. I can also accept that it left issues unresolved, but I think it was clearer on these than most people, including yourself believe; see the Court’s comments on trans-rights which my original comment referred to

Tenison Blue @tenisonblue.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
I agree that Parliament needs to deal with this. The current set of legislation does not achieve an equitable and consistent outcome
070
Tenison Blue @tenisonblue.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
This is where I don’t agree. A lot of interpretations of the judgement are inconsistent with the judgment itself, eg the latest guidance, the judgement is incoherent with respect to other legislation, eg GRA, and it doesn’t address any of the practicalities, but it is coherent.
110
Tenison Blue @tenisonblue.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
I’m not lawyer, so I may be over interpreting but I read some of the language used by the Supreme Court in its judgment about trans still being one of the protected characteristics as an warning not to do stuff like this

This is spectacular, folks. We live in a moment in American history when the president and his administration are so racist and dumb that a toy company has to put out a statement saying: "OUR GIANT ROBOT THAT TURNS INTO A TRUCK DENOUNCES RACISM AND HAS NO CONNECTION TO THE CURRENT PRESIDENT."
