870 French households are disconnecting from the gas grid everyday. At the current rate the gas grid will be completely abandoned in 38 years. But the rate will increase. France is entering the gas grid doom loop.

🤦 So we are now telling GBE to invest its wholly insufficient budget, that has already been raided to bail out the Gov's nuclear ambitions, to build grid. No doubt Gov could use its lower borrowing costs to substantially lower grid upgrade costs but it needs a real budget to do so.

A depressingly familiar take away from the Centre for Net Zero showing bill savings with PV+🔋 (+ToU etc) (others have covered that) is just how hard it is to nudge people off basic tariffs More than 1/2 stayed on flat tariffs despite being offered alternatives with far bigger savings.

Microsoft's data center subcontractor in New Jersey illegally runs a bunch of gas "backup" generators on site, figuring they won't get caught or will just eat the wrist-slap fines if they do. Regulatory enforcement is so bad that a third party had to take drone images to get the state to act.

Another piece on energy from me today (happy Friday, I guess!) This time it's a bit of a good news story: the latest on electricity prices decoupling from gas. Decoupling is still happening, and electricity bills would be higher if the UK didn't have so much clean power.
Chart shows the change in gas and electricity bills between April and October in 2022 and 2026 - during two energy crises.
In 2022, electricity prices rose almost as fast as gas prices (88% v 68%). In 2026, gas prices rose much faster (33% compared to 9%)

I think you can actually see the seam here between what the BBC journalist wrote, accurately repeating the statement of the expert, and where the editor watered down the headline
BBC headline is "Climate change likely played role in Nepal-Tibet flood, study finds" - note the "likely"The first actual paragraph of the story says "There was absolutely no doubt that human-induced climate change played a role here in the preconditioning of the disasteri, said Dr Friederike Otto, a climatologist at Imperial College London who co-authored the study." Note the "absolutely no doubt", which is quite different to the likely in the headline

European gas is above €82/MWh - the highest since late 2022. Hormuz remains largely shut and gas storage is at 68% going into winter. None of this started in Europe but we pay for it. The only exit is using less gas. Heat pumps, electrified industry, insulation.

The global power fleet (excluding hydro) withdrew 29.8 billion cubic meters of freshwater worldwide in 2025, BloombergNEF research finds, and a more-rapid energy transition would significantly reduce this at least from existing power assets by 2050.
A screenshot of two BloombergNEF charts of freshwater withdrawal for non-hydro power plants in two BloombergNEF power system scenarios to 2050, Economic Transition and Net Zero. In both scenarios the power withdrawal drops, more rapidly in Net Zero. In 2050, the Economic Transition figure is down to just under 20 billion cubic meters, while for Net Zero is is still about 12 billion.
