Removing one travel lane in each direction from the Lynnway would add roughly one minute to most peak-direction trips and just over two minutes southbound during the morning commute, according to an updated travel analysis by state transportation officials.

Chiarenza said the cost of traffic delay to drivers is calculated based on the assumption that there’s 1.5 people per car on average. He adds that the travel time cost and the fuel cost of being in traffic longer is about $1.7 million.

“If you look at 10 years of crash history, we’ve got four fatalities, over 10 serious injuries and hundreds of minor and suspected injuries and property damage only. On average per year, that’s $16 million worth of loss in USDOT’s calculations,” he said. “Using straight metrics from the source, we’re talking about trading up to $1.7 million of delay time to save $16 million in life and limb. I think that’s a pretty good deal.”

The other side of this is, of course, many daycare workers are so poorly paid they are low income. Free daycare could actually solve both issues. Freeing parents to join the workforce and paying workers a living wage.

The experiment has been run. In Quebec low cost daycare resulting in tens of thousands of additional women joining the workforce. The increase in taxes to both provincial and federal governments were more than the cost of the subsidy.
