All right get ready for a big 🧵 of starter packs of niche communities and interests whatnot because YOU CAN DO THIS TOO FOR YOUR NICHE COMMUNITY! Starve that fucking fascist site. Get your people out. Make some starter packs to lure them and reward them once they get over here. You can do it!

Used up my whole year‘s quota of one (1) “please react like this and not like that” post doing this, probably not worth it. Mods please suspend me if I go into the red.

What if instead of rushing to respond to Gruber’s “X is a delightful place for people who are fun and not weird downers” bait post with the much-desired engagement we just made a little face and kept walking. Could we try that, as a treat.

I’ve been kinda goth since I was like nine, so I don’t think I’m coming at this from a mortality-avoidant POV but the American fixation with hyper-consumerist displays of multiple giant plastic skeletons during the death holiday seems a little on the nose

Piranesi says the world and the epistemic bubbles we actually live in are prisons and but also liberation, that the terrible limits on cognition imposed by [religion, science, devastating illness] are also protective freedoms, that amnesia is salvific but makes us brutally vulnerable to abuse.

There is obviously a whole body of scholarship pointing in this direction so forgive me for saying something so obvious but the media needs to treat tech executives like the leaders of hostile governments because that is exactly what they are

A thing I learned about Meta when I was trying to understand how their statements relate to their actions a few years ago is that *they just tell absolutely indefensible lies* and journalists almost always let them. They believed no one would ever punish them for it in any way that matters.

AI is a normal technology entangled with a normal demon. Leaving aside intentional use to make bad things worse, the former is going to produce normal accidents (some of which will be extremely bad) and the latter is going to continue making people lose their minds.

I think this is a good safety conversation to have, fwiw, we do not have to address Roko nor his basilisk or other culty scenarios. There are plenty of basic humans-being-crap things to worry about, starting with law enforcement being awful. AI doesn’t even have to be good to make that worse.
