AI “criti-hype” is a clear instance of materialized science fiction. The imagined superintelligence doesn’t need to exist to reshape the world: its anticipated arrival already directs investment, builds data centres, shapes regulation and concentrates authority in the firms promising to control it.

"yes, we are going to need gas for some time" This sounds reasonable and level-headed but it is a genuinely bonkers thing to say about a toxic product we need to eliminate ASAP to protect our own health and safety. No other 'useful' but dangerous product has been talked about in this way.

The vast majority of people who ‘debate’ immigration have no understanding of the phenomenon they’re ‘debating’. Just look at the people who voted for leaving the EU thinking it’ll mean better control over the UK’s borders and therefore fewer brown migrants and asylum seekers. They had no idea.

The fact that we say there is a ‘legitimate debate to be had about immigration’ is a victory of the far right. We are already playing by their rules. They already won.

As a brown migrant living in the UK legally, this is precisely why there can be *no* compromise on the fundamental right of seeking asylum. Pretty quickly it’s anyone who ‘looks’ like an asylum seeker - ie brown or black - who is targeted. No one is safe from this.

To achieve machines they own and control having special legal status, "robot rights", they can also dehumanise people to bridge the gap with machines too. This also helps them fire people. Two mutually reinforcing ideas that protect them for the law and erode human and workers' rights.
