Section of a long thread on the different groups of Thai Chinese migrants So much of it seems based on which steamship lines happened to open to which ports Much like Sicilians in the US, fairly marginal groups back home can, via disproportionate migration, create entirely new worlds in diaspora

The Chinese characters in Sinners explicitly speak Taishanese (a southeast Chinese language not mutually intelligible with Cantonese spoken by a very disproportionate number of Chinese migrants to the US) which I thought was an incredibly niche but very accurate note

Netflix’s East of Eden very deliberately acknowledges one of the characters speaks *Cantonese* and not ‘Chinese’. And maybe that’s in the original Steinbeck but still, I appreciate it

If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?
If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it matter if it stutters from the pain?
Curated by Jeffrey Choy Jeffrey Choy , The Stutter of a Fallen Tree brings together artists from Hong Kong to explore dissolving roots, grief, displacement, and the disorientation that follows the collapse of familiarity.
Through Hong Kongers geopolitical lens, the exhibition reflects on journeys too personal to articulate, and the moments when language falters in the face of loss.
Presented at NGO DEI Den Haag, this cross-vocational exhibition brings together visual arts, installations, written and spoken text, sound, and dance, a space for stories of lost and acknowledgement.
We warmly invite you to join us for the opening reception.

The Fake Art Book Fair: Zines for Change
Special Follow-Up Lecture

Fresh from this weekend's @thefakeartbookfair, New Bloom welcomes our creative community back to DAYBREAK 破曉咖啡 for more conversation and idea exchange!

TALK TITLE:

"Starting with a One-Sheet Zine B-side: Finding Community Through Self-Publishing and Art Book Fairs"

"Being part of a collective and an organization is amazing, but how did I get here?" Branching off from his talk at The Fake Art Book Fair, our invited guest speaker — steeb (스팁) — will share his two-year journey through self-publishing, art book fairs, and, naturally, activism, while trying to find community.

What started with making zines as a way to relieve stress became a bridge to connect with others, eventually leading him into different forms of organizing and activism. The art book scene, being one of the most genuine and welcoming spaces to express oneself, also gave him the freedom to move from commercial graphic design toward becoming a more expressive, multidisciplinary artist.

steeb will talk about how these different parts of his practice became intertwined, and how the people he met along the way shaped where he is today.

SPEAKER BIO:

steeb 스팁 ( @idiotartstudent ) is a Korean-American interdisciplinary designer and self-publisher based between NYC and Seoul. His practice blends visual narratives, immersive and interactive storytelling, and small-scale experiential publishing as tools for cultivating belonging, everyday archival, and cross-cultural exchange. Rooted in personal experience, his work highlights modest yet sincere stories often overlooked in everyday life, presented through tactile, handheld forms.

A four-panel comic titled "yellow-rumped warbler poem". In panel 1, a yellow-rumped warbler stands on a branch in a late autumn scene, and says "Fall is here." In panel 2, the warbler watches a brown leaf fall to the ground, and says "Winter's near." In panel 3, the warbler faces the viewer as brown leaves fall, and says "Need some cheer?" In panel 4, the warbler is showing its luminous yellow rump, and cheerfully says "See my rear."
