We, the undersigned, stand in solidarity with the Transformative Justice Collective (TJC) and other civil society advocates in Singapore. We express grave concern about reports of criminal proceedings in connection with anti-death penalty and pro-Palestine advocacy. It has been brought to our attention up a few times and we would be remiss to ignore it. Cornell University has again shown it is an unsafe institution for women.

We are just a small project that’s not even based in the US but we can’t ignore what has happened. Not only have Cornell failed to protect the survivor, they have shielded the perpetrators of a horrific gang rape.

In light of everything that has transpired we are taking the step of blacklisting Cornell University and taking the additional step of making it public. We know it’s not much but it is what is within our power to do in this situation.

What this means:
We will not highlight or promote events happening at Cornell University.
We will not highlight or promote events organised by Schools or departments or Cornell University Press at other locations.
We will not highlight nor promote book launches or talks about books published by Cornell University Press.

At this time we are not extending it to all faculty. So if a Cornell University faculty member is speaking elsewhere at an event organised by different org. We will still promote that (assuming we see it, it’s relevant etc).

We didn’t really want to take this step as over the years we have been in operation, Cornell East Asian Studies, Cornell University Southeast Asia Program (SEAP) & other orgs we appreciate have held a lot of informative events at or with Cornell University that we have learned a lot from & Cornell University Press has published books that have developed our understanding BUT the Cornell University’s actions (and lack of action) are beyond the pale. To these departments, parts of Cornell University, we urge you to use what institutional power / influence you have to push the administration to do better.

28/9, at least 33 people were killed and approximately 40 injured in an airstrike on a civilian market in Kyauk Taw, Rakhine State. Today, Malaysia is reportedly set to deport 1,476 refugees as part of a plan to forcibly return around 5,000 Myanmar refugees.

In fact, these are scenes we have not seen on British streets. Immigration needs to be deal with, I will be the first to say that and we are dealing with it. The boat crossings have been halved since six years ago, net migration is down massively.
