The “we are short staffed today our apologies” sign at the ward entrance has been laminated and has been in place so long the edges are curling. I’d rather my taxes went towards more nurses than more tax cuts.

ISTM that a lot of National's recent policy announcements are not being made in good faith, because Simeon (or whoever) must be totally aware that any potential coalition partner will find them completely unacceptable. This is policy to be traded away, not a commitment. #nzpol

Drug testing has (by design) captured all the attention, but it's nowhere near the worst bit. For more than 30 years, benefit levels have been kept lower than the cost of staying alive. On purpose. Campaigning on the back of cutting them even further is monstrous. The cruelty is the point.

If you really want to get "more people off welfare and into work", consider not tanking the economy. That typically works better than performative cruelty.
The party also promised:
to provide "intensive, work-focused support" for 30,000 jobseekers who have been on Jobseeker for more than a year, with more funding for employment programmes that support young people into work.
lowering the rate of payment for those who had been on the benefit for two of the previous three years, from 1 April 2028. There would be a smaller reduction for households with dependent children.
those who repeatedly leave employment without good and sufficient reason would face a 26-week non-entitlement period, up from 13 weeks.
from 1 April 2028, the minimum residence period to qualify for main benefits will increase from two years to five years.
Upston said the party was focused on "getting more people off welfare and into work".

And sure, people will say that government isn't efficient when it comes to providing those services, and maybe that's true in some ways, but also it's hugely dependent on how you measure efficiency in the first place. And even if that's true, does it make up for the profit-taking of privatisation?

Who had gripping up and thrusting with ol' Luxo on their bingo card this year? Anyone? #nzpol
Luxon repeatedly returned to what he called five "strategic thrusts"... world-class
education, science and technology, modern
infrastructure, less red tape, and more trade
and investment.

"Let's take those thrusts and execute like hell against them, and get it done. That would be my advice,"' he told the city's business leaders."The challenge for all of us in this room is to come together, get it gripped up, sorted and
joined up with one plan and then execute and execute."

"It's a mindset thing." he told them.
