We've just heard the terribly sad news that Phil Gifford has passed away. Chris Bourke says, "Gifford was a giant in New Zealand journalism for half a century...What is missing from the reports of his unexpected death, on Tuesday, aged 79, is that he was also one of NZ’s best music writers... 🧵

I saw a post over the weekend talking about Labour's proposal to cap public transport fares. Hadn't thought about it in ages because nobody seems to be campaigning on it. Surely it's one of the more tangible things to be hammering when elections are won and lost in the cities?

So MBIE officials recommended spending less, but targeting the money towards local music festivals. And Louise Upston chose to spend much more, but hand it all to multinational companies and overseas artists.
They reveal MBIE’s reasoning as to why it advised the government against investing in concerts, including a lack of “wider benefit opportunities” and “no international brand visibility”, though it said many countries, including Australia and Malaysia, offer concert funds. Instead, MBIE suggested funding local music festivals with a smaller, discrete, one-off fund. This is advice which Upston also seems to have ignored; late last year, the long-running music festival Splore called it quits, saying its $240,000 funding request had been denied.

Your daily reminder that austerity politics is never about the money. It's only an excuse for conservative politicians to stop spending money on things they don't value. Benedict takes up a lot of oxygen, but doesn't even feature in this list of risks to local democracy sitting around the table.

Labour can similarly try to change people's minds or increase salience of issues with skilful politics & campaigning, rather that strictly following what focus groups tell them is already salient. Quality policy from Labour here, but they didn't have to wait on the Greens! Push on something else.

Yes. I think separating retail and wholesale is likely to be more effective that Kiwimart, personally, but I'm confident we wouldn't have everyone except ACT bidding different duopoly busting strategies if the Greens hadn't kicked it off. You *can* lead with policy, not just follow.

Prime Minister addressing a State of Auckland event on Friday, as reported by Jonathan Killick for The Post (1/4)

“The challenge for all of us in this room is to come together, get it gripped up, sorted and joined up with one plan and then execute and execute.”

“It’s a mindset thing,” he told them.(2/4) Luxon repeatedly returned to what he called five “strategic thrusts” – world-class education, science and technology, modern infrastructure, less red tape, and more trade and investment.

“Let’s take those thrusts and execute like hell against them, and get it done. That would be my advice,” he told the city’s business leaders.(3/4) Luxon said New Zealand had a “really big problem” reaching long-term agreement on infrastructure, pointing to the Cambridge to Piarere expressway as an example.

“It’s on, off, on, off … It’s not sending men or women to the moon or doing Middle East peace or anything. It’s like, building a road.”(4/4) “And remember we’re really bad at asset management, you know, the worst of the world … Don’t freak out or take that as criticism. It’s just, you’ve got to know where you’re starting from so you can actually try and professionalise the joint.”
