It's exactly the same reason that streaming services are now frantically having to reinvent bundled cable tv. The technology of streaming was NEVER the product. AD FREE access to a large library of quality (or, frankly, familiar old comfort watches) on demand was the product. Not the platform.

Unlike cheap internet access or 3G phones (the true drivers of the 90s/2000s explosion) consumer AI is a means with no end. You can't sell that to consumers. Only to businesses that misunderstand the relationship between technology and profits/cost-savings. Because to them, it's magic beans.

This quote skeet reminded me to update my profile picture to the annual "spooky" Octoberween version. This is probably going to be the extent of my Spooky Season celebration this year, but maybe the spirits will move me to actually (gasp) watch a movie…

It Follows where the human protagonist is stalked by a procession of Muppets feels like it’d be a hoot I can’t figure out which person should be the muppet in Creep. Also in some ways this is literally just the new Resident Evil movie as it exists.

There are nominally simple criteria for most pain levels but they're almost never given at intake, and hell to apply *while in pain*. (I've had daily pain for decades and still sometimes stumble over, say, a 3 vs. a 4.) The kids' version with smiley/frowny emoji is objectively more useful.

BEST NYC SUBWAY LINES TO NAP ON, A RANKING 🧵 1. NQRW. Trains are roomy and usually pretty uncrowded, and the old trains with the orange seats have more seats than average, so you're more likely to get a place to have a nap. Also, the local is slow, so you're less likely to miss your stop

I strongly disagree with this take. New York, like any other city, has been a city of transplants, and will continue to be one. Immigration makes us stronger. The only people who are not transplants or descendants of transplants are the Lenape forcibly displaced by English and Dutch colonizers.

Growing up, when someone dropped a glass dish it was obligatory to cheer "Great shot kid, that was one in a million" like Han Solo in Star Wars because those things explode like the Death Star. On the other hand, I still have one (1) Corelle plate from that set in daily use 30 years later!

Star Wars (arcade). I think the Empire conversion kit was already out by '85, and it was the stand-up cabinet instead of the cockpit model, but I could stand on top of a milk crate at Gem Spa on St. Marks Place and pilot my X-Wing through vector graphics while sampled movie quotes played.

I’m sorry, this is one of the funniest things I’ve ever read. This is the purest expression of gamer brain ever published. It cannot be parodied.
How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ~ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale.
Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Feel compelled to praise this as a tough but strongly recommended listen, partly because I initially stopped listening after the first episode. (Storytelling-first, reporter-centered frame is exasperating and never fully recedes, but series improves dramatically as it folds in more perspectives.)

I was "okay" traveling through a surreal ghost-town NYC to/from my forced overnight shifts, but Animal Crossing's real-time clock meant the NPCs also wouldn't interact with me and that is probably the worst feeling I have ever had playing a video game in my life.
