My usual bio is: "Pop culture and narcissism, from a chronically ill movie buff. I try to be one of the good randos." boxd.it/35y5 This, however, is mostly a doomscrolling, "spent 14 years on Twitter and it broke my brain" account.

Remembering that time when I binged the Resident Evil movies, falling in, then rapidly out, of love with the social media / #Letterboxd meme of "Paul W. S. Anderson, Vulgar Auteur" despite myself. (Retribution remains my answer to the "guilty pleasure"/"pure cinema" question, though.) boxd.it/IfJu
The opening line of my Letterboxd review of Resident Evil: Afterlife from February 4, 2017.

I won’t be hopping on board the “Paul W.S. Anderson is a visionary auteur” bandwagon anytime soon, but yeah, I’m starting to see where people are coming from on that. The entirety of my Letterboxd review of Resident Evil: Afterlife from February 6, 2017, written in uncharacteristic all-lowercase with no punctuation to convey my shock.

holy shit

i was wrong

paul w s anderson is a visionary auteurIt was fun to finally be able to hop on the bandwagon after the last film, but this is where I hop right back off again, as Anderson tries to reclaim the two Resident Evil films he didn’t direct—Apocalypse and Extinction—and only manages to prove that they were bad ideas to begin with.

I try not to whine about gentrification but these upscale pizza places are a bit much
The top Google Review of a jewelry appraiser. Five stars. Great tasting toppings on a perfectly crispy crust.

Literally the only times I have ever heard about Neopets, for decades, is when it becomes a exemplar of internet/geek culture drama and I think that's kind of beautiful.

Spooky Season plus chronic insomnia equals a rare #LetterboxdFriday where I've seen 9 horror flicks since Monday's fall equinox. My #LastFourWatched are a pair of supernatural martial arts comedies and a pair of movies about perfectly normal 12 year old girls. boxd.it/35y5
Tom Yum Phee (2005), Magic Cop (1990), Let Me In (2010), and Abigail (2024)

I generally prefer Operation Watch Horror Movies During Decorative Gourd Season to be a celebration, but given the state of the world and my own health (both somehow even worse than usual), I'll settle for a distraction.

tbf it was already extremely weird
Screenshot of a post from the Helldivers 2 subreddit. Photo of a person with an arm tattoo of a meme reportedly referenced by Charlie Kirk's killer. Post title "Damn. Not for nothing, but it's gonna be weird to have one of these tattoos."

A 7 panel "Peanuts" comic strip by Charles M. Schultz, published January 24, 1954.

1. Lucy tells Linus "That's what I think of your box of cookies!" as she kicks it away.

2. Lucy tells Schroeder "That's what I think of your ol' piano!" as she kicks it away.

3. Lucy tells Violet "That's what I think of your ol' stamp collection!" as she kicks it away.

4. Lucy tells Charlie Brown "And that's what I think of your ol' picture puzzle!" as she kicks it away.

5. Lucy tells Shermy "And that's what I think of your stupid ol' marbles!" as she kicks them away.

6. Lucy tells Patty "And that's what I think of your silly ol' color crayons!" as she kicks them away.

7. An angry mob of Patty, Charlie Brown, Shermy, Schroeder, and Violet chase Lucy, who frets, "I'm frustrated and inhibited, and nobody understands me."

There's an often truly brilliant writer in the games media space who is also frequently an enormous asshole online (Mean Girl cosplay, double down, DARVO, then delete & retreat). Every time the cycle repeats I become more cynical and less willing to extend them the benefit of the doubt.

Maybe not the best decision to stay up long past my bedtime to finish reading A Canticle for Leibowitz (1959) overnight.
The abbot snapped off the set. “Where’s the truth?” he asked quietly. “What’s to be believed? Or does it matter at all? When mass murders been answered with mass murder, rape with rape, hate with hate, there’s no longer much meaning in asking whose ax is the bloodier. Evil, on evil, piled on evil. Was there any justification in our “police action” in space? How can we know? Certainly there was no justification for what they did–or was there? We only know what that thing says, and that thing is a captive. The Asian radio has to say what will least displease its government; ours has to say what will least displease our fine patriotic opinionated rabble, which is what, coincidentally, the government wants it to say anyhow, so where’s the difference?

Exhibit A. "I'm doing the thing ironically, and we're all friends here, so it isn't incredibly fucking obnoxious, actually." The Poster's Creed.
A 47K follower account complaining, understandably, about drive-by replies from people who haven't read the post they're responding to, followed by two joke replies (31.9K and 26K followers, respectively), pretending to do exactly that.

what does your letterboxd bio say? #filmsky #movies #film
I kept taking my ratings seriously so they had to go.

Objective, apolitical criticism is neither.

Personality cults are boring.

I like shoot-em-ups.
