As this article alludes to, part of what we’re seeing is the cozification of media writ large: the desire, in these times, to swaddle the mind. I don’t believe that to be literature’s purpose, and I worry this is not so much a gateway to reading as it is a separate entrance entirely.

First 50-mile week ever. No matter how the race goes, I’m really proud of my training. Two years ago, I was preparing for my first 5K. Now, I’m healthily building up to my first marathon. #running

When they say you’ll be hungry all the time during marathon training, believe them. I need a snack after my snack after my pre-snack meal, which came shortly after my post-snack snack.

ICYMI: I talked with Jake on @criticalerrorpod.bsky.social about game length, endurance, and credentialing. While my mic quality was confusingly poor, the conversation itself (I think) is great.

Taken to playing FE on the train this week, and the size of the Switch 2 is selling me on the desirability of something like the Retroid Pocket Nova. It’s meant to be used on the move. The Switch 2? Not so much. The moment that thing’s on sale, I think I’m gonna jump for it.

How are you approaching Fortune’s Weave? Are you waiting until the end of Act I to switch characters, or, like me, are you dabbling across timelines to keep the complexity level largely consistent?

I think @jmrivera.bsky.social is right on the whole here, but I still find most games flippant about how they fill their hour counts. This is where I struggle to reach the same zen as he achieves: I resent it when any art form feels entitled to my time without a reciprocal editorial vision.
They're not even all that respectful of your time on a craft level: you could probably trim the whole saga by a dozen hours if you just cut all the footage of characters walking into, or leaving, a room.

I am begging, *begging*, for a mainstream game review that pulls a rhetorical stunt like the post-quote “Huh?” in the Times review of Summer of Our Discontent.
For non-whites, even though the mixed-race population has become the fastest-growing segment of the American demos and, in real terms, a disproportionate but statistically small and decreasing number of unarmed Black civilians were killed by police annually (typically between 15 and 25 per year from a population exceeding 40 million, according to The Washington Post's
"Fatal Force" database) - and indeed other quality-of-life markers have been equalizing for significant numbers of Black people since the civil rights movement - the death of [Trayvon] Martin followed by [Michael]
Brown (regardless of the specific contingencies of that case), and a high-profile slate of videotaped police and vigilante killings that converged with the proliferation of camera-equipped smartphones and the pervasiveness of social media, thwarted any sell-congratulatory sense of the inevitability of social progress still alive in the first half of Obama's second administration.
Huh? In addition to such passages, "Summer of Our Discontent" includes many distended excerpts - some spanning three pages - from not-so-obscure sources, including The Times.

Understandably, the urge to see every storyline in Fortune’s Weave won out among critics. I’m curious to see whether that proves true for the audience writ large. Forgive the running metaphor, but it seems structured like a backyard ultra: How many laps will you choose to endure?
