We need to rephrase the whole discussion in terms of hazardous products, instead of "minds". And then we need to make sure that there's liability. A model hacks someone? Put a C-suite guy in jail. A model produces sexual harassment material? Put a C-suite guy in jail. Watch how fast things get safe

Little "will to power" take: Maybe they want it to be conscious, because they want to feel power over it. 🤷 (Like, if they *were* right, and Claude *had* moral standing, this whole thing would come down to "we're trying to build slaves for ourselves" - surely, a God complex if there ever was one)

I see some discussion here about the days of stochastic parrots being over, and I think there is an in-ter-est-ing thing to note that *one's own* conversations a chatbot can seem quite plausible and useful but the minute someone else sends you some AI-generated text, it is clearly no good at all

The better AI gets, the more (and more subtle) AI psychoses we're gonna see, especially among intellectually inclined people. Not because the machines make you insane, but because it's becoming painfully obvious that sanity isn't just an individual-level property, but something social, ...

shutting down frat houses won't end rape culture, but it will disorganize a lot of rapists, and i think that's probably worth doing if only to destabilize what is apparently an ecology of organizations that functionally exist to rape women per the whole "purpose of a system is what it does" insight.

That is, the results were already known, the researchers who discovered them put them into Claude, and hence the model "discovered" the results later I don't think this is a sustainable business model, going from stealing all data to stealing your paying customers' data?

In what world is it the purview of the President/Executive branch “to force conservative cultural changes on academia‘? And why end the paragraph without noting that there is no legal justification whatsoever for Trump and his minions to “force cultural change” on institutions of higher education.
Inside the White House, some of Mr. Trump’s top lieutenants have expressed frustration about a perceive slowdown in the adminstration’s attempts to force conservative cultural changes on academia.
