If I was stuck in a castle with Richard E. Grant for a week there’s no way I’d make past the first meal time before demanding the finest wines available to humanity.

I have said before and will again: any electoral reform commission must NOT rule out a change of system BEFORE the next election if needed. We cannot risk a minority vote handing a huge majority to any party that would take a shredder to democracy itself.

Three people, including a child, drowned in the Channel today. Our politics is so broken that the debate is never about how we stop these deaths and always about how we can come up with harsher policies that make more deaths inevitable.

I'm just going to keep yelling this louder and louder until it clicks: weird overpaid AI nerds hand-wringing about human extinction are trying to distract you from the extremely deadly and serious harms they are causing yesterday, today and tomorrow www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
Headline: "US Data Centers Set to Burn More Natural Gas Than Most Nations" above a photo of natural gas compressor towers, power lines and a crane at an industrial site, illustrating rising gas use tied to data centers.News excerpt reporting that U.S. data centers’ natural gas use is expected to grow by 15 billion cubic feet per day by 2035—amounting to more gas than every country except China, Russia, Iran and the U.S., citing the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

With caveats needed (this is too little, far too late & some of what Miliband said in the full speech was more disappointing)… I am so heartened to see a UK Foreign Secretary finally willing to make this case in Parliament. This may have felt impossible just weeks ago.

AI cannot lie to you. It is a piece of software which failed to follow your instructions. AI cannot escape instructions. It’s just failing the premise of its design. AI is not smart, it does not have agency, it cannot choose or deceive. It’s just badly made.

"The right to protest is fundamental to our democracy". As long as the protest is not about Palestine, climate or any other issue that major lobbyists want to shut down. If you're protesting about asylum seekers, on the other hand, your concerns are legitimate, and we're making policy in response.

The use of AI in asylum decision-making is a disaster. AI hallucinated a document that led to an asylum application being denied. Applicants aren't being informed that opaque AI tools are being used in their case, nor being given the opportunity to correct errors churned out by these opaque tools.

It's a cliche that leaders keep promising change that never happens - but there's a case that the opposite is true. We've had one huge, structural change after another: austerity, Brexit, massive changes to immigration... What we've lacked is honesty about the costs & trade-offs of those changes.
