The article and the framing is such a clear sign that fully-throated pro high-speed rail outside/grassroots advocacy is desperately needed in California. @movecalifornia.bsky.social & @transbaycoalitiocalmatters.org are stepping up to fill that void calmatters.org/politics/202... (1/2)

California’s high-speed rail authority made a legislative wishlist. It mostly stalled out
California’s bullet train agency said timely construction of the rail line depended on these reforms. They mostly failed.

The Calmatters series was excellent, and the victims of reckless, repeat DUI driving described in it deserve much better than this. Honestly, the members of California legislature should be embarrassed that this counts as progress.

the permitting reform deal is extremely good and Dems should support it because 1. It will lower carbon emissions 2. It will not help Trump politically, and most of the benefits won’t be felt until 2029 3. we won’t get a better deal while Trump is President 4. We can always improve it in 2029

In a rare Newsom W, today he signs AB 2222, the Community NEWS Act, which would establish some of the best tax incentives/rebates for newsrooms in the country. It would send $40M/year back into California newsrooms to keep journalists employed. Check out the presser happening live right now:

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

Left-NIMBYs love to pit welfare state expansion against land use reform, but the latter can 1) can achieve significant poverty reductions 2) without means testing or administrative burdens, and 3) at a net gain for the public budget, which can then be used to expand the welfare state.

It's wild to me that, while Del Mar alts are fairly far along in study, the best we have for san clemente track relocation is an OC supe saying earlier this month that OCTA will 'soon' embark on a study to relocate the tracks... IN 30 YEARS. They intend to keep the tracks here for 3 MORE DECADES.

A fun quirk of American urban planning is production of 990 page documents where the observable universe is a narrow strip a hundred feet wide. The yellow areas are unmeasurable and unknowable, we can only infer their existence through the forces they exert elsewhere. berkeleyca.gov/sites/defaul...

It's not something I feel like doing myself, but it would be really cool to break down total water rights in California by partisanship of the owners. It might really shift perspectives to learn that we're turning our state into a desert when 70% of acre-feet are owned by Republicans.

This "founder LLC" setup seems particularly corrosive. In ordinary supervoting share structures, a split between supervoters can at least lead to the common stockholders getting a say on contentious issues — but here they're always voting their shares as a bloc, so ordinary votes become irrelevant.
Under this arrangement, a majority vote of the seven co-founders will direct a single share of Class F stock that amounts to 50.1% of the total voting power over key corporate matters, including the election of some board directors and other matters submitted to investors.
