It took me nearly a year to make it happen, working with staff so it didn’t feel totally overwhelming to them. If folks are interested in pursuing in other cities, I’m happy to walk them through how we’re doing it, at no hard costs to the city and minimizing staff time.

The article and the framing is such a clear sign that fully-throated pro high-speed rail outside/grassroots advocacy is desperately needed in California. @movecalifornia.bsky.social & @transbaycoalitiocalmatters.org are stepping up to fill that void calmatters.org/politics/202... (1/2)

California’s high-speed rail authority made a legislative wishlist. It mostly stalled out
California’s bullet train agency said timely construction of the rail line depended on these reforms. They mostly failed.

Having talked with literally thousands of people face-to-face this year about the coming transit cuts if we don't pass the Regional Transit Measure (RTM) I've encountered a surprising subset of folks who don't understand that: It costs transit agencies money to run service.

I would encourage you to take no comfort from polls. If they’re right, great. Better, though, to assume they are wrong and act as you would if the polls said your desired result is way behind. (And they are probably wrong.) Here’s a Halloween poll from a decade ago to motivate you.
A screenshot of the New York Times homepage from October 31st, 2016. It shows a poll result on a blue background at the very top of the page, just under the New York Times’ logo: “Presidential Forecast: Chance of winning >> 90% Clinton, 10% Trump.” The face of each candidate is positioned next to their poll results.

AC Transit is in the middle of a reliability crisis with only 93% of service running, a fiscal crisis with a $50M budget shortfall, and an ethics crisis with majority of board covering up independently confirmed harassment of another board member And directors aren't even showing up to meetings 😲

What’s extra absurd about this is that in my 12 years on the BART Board - heading a rail agency - no BART director ever attended an out of country rail conference. If AC Transit directors really want to attend rail conferences, there are plenty in the US.

Good organizing and advocacy is a lot like climate change. Shifts the entire ecosystem and makes certain outcomes way more likely, but can't guarantee. E.g. this summer I helped lead a push that saved ~$350M in Transit funding. And that built off decades of work from other groups.
