My school’s online platform changed all the tabs to start with “My”. Like “MyAcademics” and “MyServices” which, in addition to making it harder to quickly find want is just stupid. If I’m logged in whose academics and services would they be? Anyway administration was very excited about this change.

The problem with education is that it's a solved problem. Students need small classes, individual attention, lots of writing, lots of feedback, access to a well-stocked library, time to think, and time to talk with their peers. We just don't like the answer, so we keep trying to do other stuff.

No one should deny that that LLMs are incredibly powerful tools with lots of capabilities. But equally no one should deny that it is absolutely eating education, not just by upending traditional models of instruction but by making people cognitively dependent on them. And that's bad.

I agree with this and will add two points. 1) It's not weird that learning and coming-of-age happens at the same time when your population is mostly 18-22 year-olds. 2) The idea that teaching and research make a weird combo is baffling in context of the entire history of the university.

Something to keep in mind as we think of the effects of AI is that making computer easier tends to make people worse at computer. Most of my students don’t know how to download a file and then find it later. They do not understand the concept of “files”.

The meaner way to say this is that people aren't very smart (myself included) and can be easily conditioned by repeating things over and over. Democrats too often try to reason with people. I'm not against reason. But you do your reasoning before you do your politics, not during.
