The problem with benevolent dictators is that we have empirical proof that access to that much of power inevitability turns your brain into spaghetti. So we should have elections and term limits for those benevolent dictators and maybe a system of checks and balances and some mechanism for removal.

We normally mention her work as part of why the fluoroscopes vanished from shoe stores. Yes, it's fun and all to let kids see their toes wriggle inside their shoes but not the best idea. In my field, she is far more important for her work at Hanford.

10 years ago today, the tory conference had a delightfully unfortunate backdrop.
Jeremy Hunt, a weaselly little twat of a white man, stands in front of a backdrop with the word "count" on it. His head partially obscures the O so it looks like it says "cunt"Some tory prick, white middle aged man with a florid complexion, stands in front of the backdrop which says "a country". His head is partially obscuring the o, so it looks like it says cunt. Sorry I cant identify him, all of these guys look the same to me

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

[A parody of MR ROGERS’ NEIGHBOURHOOD, in which the kindly Mr Rogers takes us to see local things in his town.]

1
[title]
MR ROGERS’ NEIGHBOURHOOD

MR ROGERS:

Hi there

2
Today, I’d like to take you to visit some of my neighbours…

[He puts his coat on to leave his house]

3
At a wonderful local event,

[We see the cute toy-town diorama of his village famous from the TV show. The camera pulls out…]

4
The Data Center protest.

[The camera has pulled out further and now we see a huge DATA CENTER at the edge of town].

5
MR ROGERS [joining a crowd protesting outside the Data Center]:

The Data Center is an enormous, windowless, endlessly humming building outside of our town

6
…Which has tripled energy prices, drank all the water, and created four jobs.

7
[to camera, as if kindly explaining to the viewing children]:

Four jobs! Golly!

8
LADY PROTESTOR [probably NAOMI KLEIN, holding a sign]:

In a way, the Data Center is kind of a vivid metaphor for a future we feel locked out of!

9
MR ROGERS [to camera again]:

A metaphor.

10
That’s something that lets us clarify our feelings about something else.

11
LADY PROTESTOR:
How do you feel, Mr Rogers?

MR ROGERS:
I feel like bringing down the government!

12
MR ROGERS [now holding a sign and protesting]:

It’s good to have neighbors.

[ends]

Your favorite Anthropic so-called "whistleblower" said that the rationalists have "specialized minds" that allow them to see that the end is about to be brought on to us by a magical machine god. Parroting the cult leader (of the rationalists, the R in TESCREAL) who says the same about himself.
His autobiography even opens with a parable: as a small child he threw his favorite squirtgun off a third-floor balcony rather than accept that his mother could lend out what was his, and felt complete when he heard it hit the pavement. He goes on to describes himself as a specialist in the technological transformation of the human species, one of the few people alive with the standing to steer it. He identifies with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the one person who sees the danger clearly and has to act while everyone else gets on with ordinary life.

There's a near-total boycott of the venue now from artists; only one act yet to cancel. All other bands have pulled out. Local inclusive venues have stepped up to host performers who told the Sportsman Club to kick rocks. Solidarity like this matters, so thanks for everyone who pulled out.

You ever read that essay about toys by Roland Barthes? The gist of it is that if you give kids a set of wood blocks of various shapes, they create worlds out of their imaginations, emphasis on create. He contrasts with toys that have predefined roles, and are adult tools in miniature

The Heritage Apple Corps have found trees in central Oregon that are genetic matches for some of the rare "lost" apple varieties we find in the islands. With more sampling, both here and there, we hope to be able to properly identify these varieties and bring them back into production.
