Pete is lost in terms of modern war. I use the example of this outgunned Ukrainian army officer who successfully terrorized a Russian unit for weeks because she "did the math." At the time, someone commented, "yeah, in combat, 'I did the math' beats 'I can do 100 pushups' every time."
Ukrainian female soldier: Okay, I said the idea is this: There is enough time to empty one full can of 32 grenades and be gone by the time the return mortar fire reaches us. I did the math.

The man behind the counter joined them at the window. “Please, writers! As Mr. Bierce’s host, I understand the urge to kill him, but you must restrain yourselves!”

Shouts and hisses rose from the crowd.

“I assure you,” the woman repeated, “there’s no reason to lay siege to this hotel! The man you’re looking for is long gone!”

A man descended the stairs. He had long legs, a curly mustache, and old-timey old-man good looks. He resembled Mark Twain if you stretched him out on a rack, and also resembled someone who might shoot you if you compared him in any way to Mark Twain. He carried a carpetbag in one hand and a cane in the other.

“Carrie,” he said, “where the devil is my breakfast? I assume you finished routing that idiot pack of polecats clamoring for my blood—”

He stopped and looked out the window. His mustache twitched.

“I’m very disappointed in you, Carrie,” he said. “En garde!”

Ambrose Bierce: Not a Furry.
A fashion has recently come in among the comic artists of getting great fun out of the lower forms of life. They have discovered and developed a mine of humor in the beasts and the birds, the reptiles, fishes and insects. Some of the things they make them say and do are really amusing. But here is where they all go wrong and spoil their work: they put upon these creatures some article of human attire—boots, a coat or a hat. They make them carry umbrellas and walking-sticks. They put a lightning rod on a bird’s nest, a latch on a squirrel-hole in a tree, and supply a beehive with a stovepipe. Why? They don’t know why; they have a vague feeling that incongruity is witty, or that to outfit an animal with human appurtenances brings it, somehow, closer to one’s bosom and business. The effect is otherwise.

When you have drawn your cow with a skirt she has not become a woman, and is no longer a cow. She is nothing that a sane taste can feel an interest in. An animal, or83 any living thing, in its natural state—is always interesting. Some animals we know to have the sense of humor and all probably have language; so in making them do and say funny things, even if their speech has to be translated into ours, there is nothing unnatural, incongruous or offensive. But a cat in a shirtwaist, a rabbit with a gun—ah, me!

Found a joke just for me: in the episode of Futurama where they go to a realm of pure numbers, Dr. Farnsworth calls it a "realm of beauty bare," a hilarious reference to the Edna St. Vincent Millay line "Euclid alone has looked on beauty bare." The fewer people get a joke, the funnier it is

“She only eats what she can forage.”

Carcosa filed this information. “Why does it have to be the water in the toilet tank?”

“That has been the subject of many discussions,” said Ashy’s great-nephew, “but I don’t feel like I’ve gotten a satisfying answer.” He started plunging the toilet.

“I’m not sure this is the right time,” said Carcosa, “but since my friends are enjoying this place so much, I was wondering if you had any other rooms for rent.”

“It’s exactly the right time. By amazing coincidence, I have a feeling the downstairs room will open up very soon.” He stuck out a damp hand. “George.”

“Carcosa. My friend is Id.”

“Is she looking for a space as well? There’s only one downstairs room.”

From down the hall came a shout. “Oh Em Gee There Was Only One Bed.”

“But it has two beds.”

“There Were Two Beds, Aw Nuts.”

I just cannot stress this enough: If you attempt a joke that doesn’t land, or you say something unintentionally problematic or hurtful, and somebody checks you on it, there are so many ways to walk it back. Take accountability. Apologize. At minimum, stop saying more words to make it worse!

Corny sticker at expo today. This show is afraid of me. I have seen its true face.

The aisles are extended gutters, and the gutters are full of fanart and keychains...

The accumulated waste of their trinkets will pile up about their waists, and they will look up and shout "Save us!" ...
... and I'll look down and whisper "No."

“Why, thank you.” Bart dug into his pocket. “Would you care for some stereoscopic views of Arizona? They might inspire you.”

The painter held the images up to the dim light. “Oh, these are great. Where’d you get them?”

“I told you,” said Id, “we’re time travelers.”

“Right, of course.” He clipped one of the stereoscopes to the top of the easel. “In that case, I’ll try to paint this coffeehouse as a desert mountainside.”

Bart gave the painter a lazy salute and moseyed into line.

Id bounced on her heels. “This is gonna work, right? This is the one that’s gonna work.”

“It must, Id. This audience is primed for activism and nostalgia. It’s the perfect emotional cocktail for Black Bart’s poem.”

“Plus his poem rules.”

“It does kind of rule, Id.”

“Cool cats and swinging kittens,” cried Ashy, “gather round and dig some verse!”

All around the coffeehouse, people stood and shuffled toward Ashy. She grabbed a lamp and tilted the fringed lampshade so the bulb shone a spotlight against the wall.

“This is it,” said Id. “It is, isn’t it? It’s time for you to read your poem! And I can read my equally rad poem.”

“Yes,” said Carcosa. She was puzzled to find that her voice shook. So did her legs as she tried to stand. She had assumed that reading her poem would be much, much easier than writing it, but maybe she had been wrong about that.

Id frowned. “Are you okay?”

“Cer. Certainly. It’s a momentous occasion, that’s all. We’re changing history.” She looked around. “There’s no reason to delay, is there?”

“Nope. A whole line’s forming. We’d better get up there.”

This isn't from my novel-in-progress, but a fanfic I've been putting an inordinate amount of work into
They couldn’t hurry very quickly, since Blanca was injured and Rosa was carrying an anvil. By the time they reached the top, approaching a narrow crag that swept the sky like a buzzard’s wing, the desert sun had nearly burned the morning away.

Blanca opened the sack she’d been dragging with her good arm and pulled out a selection of objects chosen for their variety: crockery, kitchenware, a wagon wheel, a roller skate, a blanket and rubber sheet from her protective gear. “We’ve made preliminary notes on the behavior of matter and energy,” she said, then paused to consider whether, in this new version of physics, the two might be the same. Objects in very fast motion tended to transform into lightning bolts or vibrating blurs. “Now we observe time.”

“Time does move strangely out here,” said Rosa. She sat down on the anvil and whipped out her notebook.

“Even you’ve noticed it, have you? Things slow down or speed up in defiance of logic. And watch this.” She plucked a prickly pear from a nearby cactus, tossed it, and shouted, “Opuntia ficus-indica!”

The prickly pear froze in midair, hovered for several seconds, then continued on its arc.

“Only when exposed to Latin nomenclature. Temporal physics here are downright whimsical.” Blanca pulled a watch out of a skirt pocket. “With one exception. Drop something off the cliff, will you?”

They emerged into a screaming orange mob.

Someone in a sweaty tank top slammed into Carcosa. Clutching the Zegnatron close to her robes, she turned, but Id was already gone. Carcosa recognized no one in the sea of open mouths and flailing arms.

She backed up against the Mystery Wall. It had grown. The old wall was now part of a much larger structure, painted with orange and black stripes and numbers of unclear significance. A vinyl banner offered WOLF NATION NACHOS.

“Carcosa!” Id shoved through a row of college guys in body paint.

“Id! Are you all right?”

“Yeah, but the universe kinda sucks. What’s going on?”

Carcosa took Id’s hand. That helped. Together, they made their way through the crowd.

“Oh right! It’s about things getting paradoxy.”

“Understandable. Time travel can be confusing.”

“Noble squirrel,” said another girl, “may I have of you one wristband?”

“Gotta see a golden acorn first,” said Id.

The girl handed her a golden acorn. Id bit it. She nodded and handed the girl a plastic wristband from the basket she was carrying. The girl squealed and ran off.

“This is our best job yet,” said Id. “Being squirrels rules.”

“I find it slightly undignified,” said Carcosa. “But back to your question.”

“Oh yeah. You know how we keep changing history?”

“The entire purpose of the plan, yes.”

“Like for example this college used to be one of the top centers for science in the entire world, and now it’s a jock school with a Pac-13 football team?”

“Before our meddling, that was the Pac-12.”

“That’s what I’m saying! So—”

“Sure, no problem.” Gently, Id slides the box out of Carcosa’s hands. She runs a hand over it. “Oh, rad. It’s a Moxon.”

“I assume that’s good.”

“You bet. Opening a Moxon is as easy as operating on my own body.”

“That shouldn’t be easy at all, Id.”

“And yet!” Id’s fingers flick over the numbered dials. “Gotta say, though, this is a top-of-the-line model. Titanium workings, precision-balanced tumblers, electronic fingerprint access…”

“But you can open it?”

“The good news is, I’ll have to force the tumblers open with an explosive.”

“How is that good news?”

Id looks up, frowning with concern. “Are you sure you remember me?”

Antimony grabbed a book and flipped through it. “Ooh, ‘City Lights’ by Langston Hughes. New York City gets all the dang poets… Have you read Joaquin Miller? He lived around here and wrote about the area.”

“If I have, the data didn’t transfer.”

“That’s normal phrasing.” Antimony leaned back and folded their hands behind their head. “Let’s see if I still remember this from poetry camp.”

Steep below me lies the valley,
Deep below me lies the town,
Where great sea-ships ride and rally,
And the world walks up and down.
O, the sea of lights far streaming
When the thousand flags are furled
When the gleaming bay lies dreaming
As it duplicates the world.

Carcosa’s head hit the table.

“Whoa, whoa!” Antimony jumped up. “Is this another poet meltdown? I’ll get the pillow.”

“What about mine?” said Id. “Did you learn anything from my poem?”

“Do you mean the one about coffee, or the one about Bierce and myself engaging in illegal activities?”

“That one wasn’t even a poem,” muttered Ambrose.

“They’re not illegal in this century,” said Id. “Though I guess they are if you do them in the park.”

“Either way,” said Bart diplomatically, “I learned I want to write something different.”

“Thanks!” Id turned to Carcosa, whose face was still buried in the pillow. “See? Bart totally dissed my poems, even though they’re awesome, but it’s okay because he learned and grew and stuff.”

“I love your poems, Id,” muttered Carcosa.

“Yeah, I love them too. Bart, what did you learn from Carcosa’s poem?”

Bart looked up from his paper. He scratched his mustache with his pen. “I reckon you used the word ‘unctuous’ wrong.”

Carcosa rose from the table like a catapult of agony. Tears streamed down her cheeks. “I’m the worst poet ever!”

“When our father opened this coffeehouse, he never imagined it’d become the heart of this town’s literary community, a haven for writers, poets, and artists.”

“If he’d known that, he wouldn’t have opened it!”

“That’s true. Cause you people are broke.”

“And now we’re out of business!”

Everyone booed. “Sorry,” said the middler-aged man, “but it’s true and we all know it. The most valuable thing about this place is the real estate it stands on. That’s why we’ve gathered the whole town here tonight, our last night of operations, to say a fond farewell to Signor Bigello’s.”

“And then we’re gonna sell the property and all the fixtures! It’s what Papa would’ve wanted!”

“It sure is. Who wants to come up and say a few words?”

Cameras, including TV cameras, rose to attention as speakers lined up at the counter. “This is it,” said Carcosa. “On my signal, Bart.”
