Seen a few folks astonished by my lack of support for ChatGPT and similar. Because AI, right? Yeah, no. What we have right now is glorified autocorrect. Glorified autocorrect that takes the energy of an entire city to do what it does, plus half of Lake Erie to cool down while it's doing it.

ADHD requires meds that are hard to get if you have ADHD. Making them a controlled substance (no delivery, no one can help pick them up, only one month at a time) is debilitating. Addiction is bad, yes, but under-medicating people has consequences too. (Ex increased traffic accidents)

Expecting people to wait 4 minutes to cross the street is delusional.
City of Leavenworth, Washington

Are you one of the thousand pedestrians walking through the Village of Lights’ LED magic this holiday season? Due to heavy traffic flows anticipated on Hwy 2, expect wait times of up to 4 minutes at the signalized crosswalks.
What can you do with your 4 minutes?
1. Look up the menu for the restaurant you’re walking to;
2. Sing “Christmas All Over Again” by Tom Petty; or
3. Finish that perfect speech to your ex you started in the shower this morning.
As you stroll through our Bavarian Village, please remember to use proper crosswalk etiquette and obey all pedestrian signals. Let’s keep everyone safe this holiday season! Thank you for your 4 minutes of patience and cooperation at the crosswalks.

Just a reminder to all the new folks that Neil Gaiman has been credibly accused of sexual assault by five different women, and is almost certainly working behind the scenes with his PR firm to bury the story. Don’t let him. And don’t follow him. More here:

Whatever I have to say about how cars ruin cities, @helenczerski.bsky.social has said more elegantly on Mastodon.
Toot from Helen Czerski:

The evidence that cars don’t work as primary mass transport in cities is everywhere: traffic jams, air pollution, accident rates, the shocking fraction of city space taken up by parking spaces, safety barriers/bollards etc. This 100 year experiment should be declared over, and we should put proper effort into the systems that HAVE been shown to work and scale: walking, cycling, e-cargo bikes, cheap/accessible/reliable public transport. This “argument” about LTNs is just lazy delay. #LTN #cities

Coming to the heart of this thread now: I cannot but help feel that the reason that these strategies proved so successful in this case was because they offered to people a very easy way of assuaging their guilt, without requiring them to make the effort of actually redistributing power.

a list of bullet points under the truck:

Needs license/registration so the government can track you
Government regularly inspects it to legally drive
Legally forces you to pay Insurance so they can pay for other people's accidents
Fuel needs big government subsidies to stay under $5/gallon
Government can revoke privilege to drive anytime

a list of bullet points under the bike:

Not required to register
No inspection requirement
Bike insurance optional. Not required
No need for government subsidies
Biking privilege cannot be revoked

A pet peeve of mine is when parents don't (gently and age appropriately) teach their kids not to interrupt them, and instead break off conversations at the child's whim. Not only does this teach kids no respect for their parents' time, they then inevitably go on to interrupt other people, too.
