Anyway I built a fun little sports (and soon more) tipping platform. No betting, no gambling ads (not now, not ever). Just fun competition with friends or enemies. trippelapp.com

Trippel · Tipping leagues for mates, clubs, pubs and offices
Run a football tipping competition for your mates, club, pub or office. Premier League and Champions League. You set the rules; Trippel keeps the score.

Opportunity‘s bottom lines are wobblier than the lines on a Squiggle. All the party has done is confirm what everyone I argued against said: they’re probably willing to swallow anything to be part of government. So, as someone who just resigned from the party: I was wrong about them.

This year can go in the bin to be honest. I’ve been messed around by multiple people and orgs I donated time and money to. People I respected. Ghosted on countless job opportunities after interviews. And more general nonsense. Lots to learn. Very frustrating.

You can also use yourtax.nz to share an image for any scenario you run, which makes it easy to contrast how each party's policy would treat people in different situations. Data presented neutrally can still communicate values.

Making it easy to check the policy behind any number, for whatever household you model. That was the whole point of YourTax.nz. It doesn’t say ‘low-tax good’ or ‘high-tax bad’. It shows what each party’s policy would do and links the source. It doesn’t exist in a vacuum, you bring the values.

The Green Party's Income Guarantee and Family Top-Up are out of yourtax.nz for now. The party emailed to say it's starting fresh for 2026, and that it'd be more representative to remove them at this stage. Their income tax and wealth tax changes still show, but this moves results for some.

Seems the National Party is using the New Lynn electorate (soon to be Waitākere) as an anti-choice base. Paulo Garcia, the current MP, is staunchly anti-choice. He's retiring. The candidate picked to replace him, Agnes Loheni, is anti-choice too.

Watched a @hankgreen.bsky.social talking about why making intelligence more abundant won't help problems that require wisdom. Intelligence helps you get what you want. Wisdom tells you what to want. It's not a technical gap. AI won't solve any crisis where we have the solution but not the will.

I'm good with AI being used for 'simple' social copy, email copy, SEO blogs etc. I say this as someone who has made a living off that stuff. I've experienced absolutely broken economics that marketing/comms agencies depend on. Let AI reform that world, and leave the creative to humans.

Received an email from our building manager to all the tenants in our building. A building built next to a major train line. It advised people that management, in response to residents' concerns about train noise, had raised "formal complaints with Metro Trains and the Public Transport Ombudsman."

A major cause of rising house prices has been increased demand from investors. Our research shows restricting negative gearing to newly built housing and scrapping the capital gains tax discount would reduce speculation and allow more first home buyers to get into their own home.

#Housing credit lotteries in #Brazil show that early access to homeownership significantly boosts #fertility rates. Subsidies and zoning changes could support young families and address demographic challenges. B van Doornik, D Fazio, T Ramadorai, J Skrastiņš cepr.org/voxeu/column... #EconSky
A graph of how winning a housing lottery affects family planning across different age groups.

Global fertility rates are falling, with major economic consequences. Conventional policies like parental leave and financial incentives have had limited impact. This column presents new evidence from Brazil’s housing credit lotteries, showing that early access to homeownership significantly boosts fertility rates. Housing affects family planning through affordability, stability, and relocation to better environments. Policymakers should consider housing reforms – such as subsidies and zoning changes – to support young families and address demographic challenges.

Adjusted for inflation, $40.9bn in Q4 of 2019 (pre-pandemic) would be $50.42bn. $37.7bn is 74.8% of that number. Still want to describe it as "creeping back up"?

Steffen @steffenrusten.bsky.social · 17/02/2025
"tourism was New Zealand’s largest export industry and delivered $40.9bn. The most recent figures show those numbers are creeping back up, with tourism bringing in $37.7bn in 2023." Journalists continue to be economically illiterate. Adjusted for inflation that's far below pre-pandemic income.
