Mind you I was asked aged 17 to read "appropriate" books and not SFF. (I was a straight A student and dutifully read all the books for French, English etc). I borrowed Plato and Aristotle and read them cover to cover. And then I stopped because I realised it was dumb. And I never forgave the ask.

I don't know what's going on in the uk but in France it's not that kids aren't reading, it's that they stop reading as they head towards the end of high school and uni. And do stop criticizing choice of reading, do continue reading even to kids who can read by themselves, and model reading for them
