Yeah I would never blame anyone for not knowing, France has truly done an incredible job at both spreading French and downplaying the history. At the time of the Revolution in 1789, only around half the population of France spoke French, less than 25% natively. Today it’s near 100%, ~90% natively.
A map of France showing the range of regional languages, with French being a gradient of yellow originating in Paris and shading into closely-related gallo-romance languages in green and blue, more distantly-related occitano-romance languages in red, and unrelated languages like Breton (Celtic) in orange and Alsacien (Allemanic) in purple.

Your daily reminder that some birds have eyelashes made of tiny modified feathers. They're found in at least one species of 28 families of birds (out of 205). An example of convergent evolution. Examples: ostriches, secretarybirds, hornbills & hummingbirds. (📷: Nicolas Reusens Photography)
Captured by @nicolasreusens, these close-ups show the eye and eyelid margin of a hummingbird at roughly 3 to 3.5x magnification.

What look like lashes are modified feathers, not hairs, and researchers have proposed that they may help protect the eye from airborne particles during flight. Eyelash-like feather structures have only been documented in a fraction of the bird families surveyed so far.

These photographs were taken at the Catia Hummingbird Sanctuary in Mexico.Captured by @nicolasreusens, these close-ups show the eye and eyelid margin of a hummingbird at roughly 3 to 3.5x magnification.

A young male Costa's Hummingbird perched on a rusted black metal gate. He is facing left, his eye is closed, and he stretches his wings and tail feathers. His crown and back are green, underside white with black furrows, and wings black. There is a tuft of white feathers on his flank below the wing. His tail is green/gray, then black with white tips. His developing throat patch has some black spots and a single iridescent feather. On the right, below the wing at the tail, are a few small drops of water from the light drizzle.

Nice AI-image-generating tool, but it will never be as great an artist as Onfim, a child who lived in the Novgorod Republic in the mid-1200s and who scribbled these drawings and schoolwork writings on birch bark at the age of 6 or 7.
Onfim’s drawing of himself on horseback as a warrior defeating an enemy. Two of Onfim’s works. On the left is a copy of a passage from the Book of Psalms he did for schoolwork. On the right is an apparently autobiographical depiction of a monster labeled with “I am a wild beast.”Some more spelling practice by Onfim with some human figures who have round heads and varying numbers of fingers on their big hands.Onfim’s writing practice accompanied by 7 little people in his particular drawing style, who tend to have very big hands with many fingers.

A great blue heron looks skyward at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado.

In this vertical color photograph, a great blue heron fills the frame as it faces the camera while balancing on its right leg. Its neck and head are turned in right profile, with its beak tilted toward the sky as it appears to study something overhead. The background creates a beautiful painterly scene, beginning with a reflection of the opposite shoreline in the upper portion of the image that naturally frames the bird. The remainder of the background is filled with the pond, which mirrors Colorado's signature blue sky.

This elegant portrait captures a moment of awareness and curiosity while showcasing a great blue heron within the wetland habitat that is essential to its survival.

We are so lucky to live in a world that has bobtail squids. 🦑📷 cr1970 (www.inaturalist.ca/observations...)
A Southern Bobtail Squid (Euprymna tasmanica) sitting on the sandy sea floor. Its arms are all in front of it, curving back or to the side. It has translucent flesh with a purplish tinge, but it mostly looks yellow from its chromatophores. It is covered in black and brown chromatophores and has green and cyan iridescence around its eye and on its mantle, and yellow iridescence on its arms, head and mantle. The photo is on a slight tilt so it looks like the bobtail squid is tilting its head.

goddamn, dude.
Then, I asked how she would feel about a person who was born female yet raised male against her will, and who, after a lifetime of pretending to be male in order to survive, finally reclaimed her female identity upon reaching adulthood. After being confronted with this scenario, the woman conceded that she would be inclined to let this person enter women-only space, thus demonstrating that her argument about male socialization was really an argument about biology after all. In fact, after being pressed a bit further, she admitted that the scenario of a young girl who was forced against her will into boyhood made her realize how traumatic and dehumanizing male socialization could be for someone who was female-identified. This, of course, is exactly how many trans women experience their own childhoods.
