By the way, if you use “Neanderthal” as a pejorative, you risk my opinion of you going down. Don’t be using our inventive, spiritual, adaptable relatives as a byword for primitiveness and stupidness or I’m gonna condemn you to trying to survive the Penultimate Glacial Period in Central Europe.

People who have never learned anything but English will learn the etymology of one word and be like “wow, English really is so many languages in a trench coat. It’s so wacky how our words come from different languages, ahahaha, how quirky. Must be the hardest language in the world.”

Was sitting in Place des Vosges today and two Americans talked nearby about applying astrology to dating (as well as toxic stuff about punishing their men and dating different ethnicities). My favorite sentence was “My mom doesn’t believe in astrology, but she believes in astronomy.” Girl, what?

I’m the cool babysitter because I promised to learn the French lyrics to “Let It Go/Libérée, Délivrée” from Frozen/La Reine des Neiges if one of the kids learns the English ones so we can sing and dance to it together in both languages.

In my language-learning server on Discord, there are a few younger people who use me as an older advice friend and right now this one girl is telling me about how her crush just liked all of her Instagram and WhatsApp stories and is like “do you think it means something?” Homie, yes. Yes, it does.

One of my online friends just sent me this picture and they said they have a gift for me when we finally meet. Holy shit, I am so excited for the Herbert Hoover socks. 💕 We’re going into the Great Depression with this one, homies.
A hand holds up socks labeled “President Herbert Hoover” with a picture of his face. A quote is present: “Progress is born of cooperation in the community—not from government restraint.” Below is Herbert Hoover’s signature. Behind my friend’s hand is a scenic natural field backdrop and a park-service sign is labeled “Tall Grasses and Open Skies.”

I know the LinkedIn imaginary-dialogue-flex post is a literary tradition and genre of itself at this point, but I do wonder, from a job-hunt perspective of course, if your lacking skills as a writer are actually something you should flaunt in this way. Where’s the hook, the emotion, the pacing?
HR: “Your expected salary is 90,000?”

Candidate: “Yes. The job posting mentioned a salary range of 75,000-1,00,000, and based on my skills, experience, and the responsibilities of this role, I believe 90,000 is fair.”

HR: “We’re going to offer you 150,000 instead.”

Candidate: “Isn’t that above your budget?”

HR: “Yes. From your résumé and your interview, we realized that you’re overqualified for this role.”

Candidate: “I didn’t expect this, to be honest.”

HR: “We want to benefit from and learn more from your experience and qualifications.”

Candidate: “Well, I thought you were going to reject me because I’m overqualified.”

HR: “No. The manager said we can’t afford to lose you to our rivals.”

Candidate: “I never thought I would come across this type of interview.”

HR: “Here is your offer. You should report on Monday!”

I appreciate that memes about Italy have just fully embraced Mario as the Platonic ideal representative of an Italian man. This little guy cooked up in a Japanese studio is just always what Italians will be. He is the most famous one of them.

Good day to everyone with pterosaur profile pics. Whenever I look at accounts I interact with most or which interact with me the most, there are a disproportionate number of you. Should I feel in danger? I dunno. I will pray for the protection of Quetzalcoatl.

I love the multiple eyes on this one so much. The Cycladic culture gets lumped in with the Minoans in so much popular discourse and I think it deserves more love on its own terms.

One of life’s great secrets is that the best workout music is actually gospel. Not like the slow-strum dimmed-lighting gospel but like the hand-clapping charismatic stuff. You feel the Spirit coming on you and you run on wings like eagles and have the faith that lifts mountains. Hallelujah, amen!

It’s honestly so disappointing that documentaries are so routinely shafted in these things. Move Planet Earth up from 84 at least to top 10. Y’all ever experienced the transcendent tranquility of watching How It’s Made when you woke up on the couch at 3 AM? That is masterful television.

I have probably posted about this before but I have a giant cladogram that I use as an attention-span-managing device where I go look up an animal and figure out how to fit it in. Anyway, been fleshing out the fishes and every time I look up a fish it’s like “oops, all teleosts!”

He’s been an abuser, a fugitive, an addict, a racist, alienated from the family, and back in our lives after he became disabled. I have seen him a number of times I can count on my fingers but every time was full of kindness and I wonder if I could have made more differences by reaching out more.

Hey, if you’re a praying person, say something for my uncle. He’s on his way out of this world. We never had much of a relationship and I know he’s already been looking forward to his suffering being over, but I have a lot on my mind and hope the transition is as calm and peaceful as it can be.

etcsl.orinst.ox.ac.uk/section5/tr5... So there’s this Ur III Dynasty Sumerian (21st century BC) poem called the Debate Between the Hoe and the Plow and it’s these two farming tools going off on each other about who’s better until the god Enlil himself favors the hoe. Straight fire.
O the Hoe, the Hoe, the Hoe, tied together with thongs; the Hoe, made from poplar, with a tooth of ash; the Hoe, made from tamarisk, with a tooth of sea-thorn; the Hoe, double-toothed, four-toothed; the Hoe, child of the poor, ….. bereft even of a loin-cloth (?) — the Hoe started a quarrel ….. with the Plough.

There’s a Prehistoric Kingdom achievement called Noah’s Park that requires having 2 of every animal species but I’m encouraging completionists to have 14 Megaloceros (kosher animal) and similar numbers of Yi, Archaeopteryx, and Microraptor (probably halakhically birds) as Noah was commanded.
Genesis 7:2-3 NRSVUE:

Take with you seven pairs of all clean animals, the male and its mate; and a pair of the animals that are not clean, the male and its mate; and seven pairs of the birds of the air also, male and female, to keep their kind alive on the face of all the earth.

Happy Bisexual Visibility Day to the best to ever do it, Alexander the Great. Depicted is the Stag Hunt Mosaic from a wealthy house in Pella, capital of ancient Macedon, around 300 BC. Many scholars think Alexander is on the right and his bodyguard and possible lover Hephaestion on the left.
Two naked muscular men in capes hunt a stag. The possible Alexander is on the right holding an antler with one hand while holding a sword in the other to dispatch the creature while the possible Hephaestion is on the left wielding a double-headed ax, which may reference his namesake Hephaestus. If this identification is correct, the dog attacking the stag may be Peritas.

As a (pretty much entirely passing) bisexual, I wanna say that while that percentage of straight (British) women unwilling to date bi men is really high, I feel like it doesn’t affect dating that much because the type of person that gets the ick from queerness is incompatible with my values anyway.

Rate my setup: Nintendo Wii with Mario Kart Wii (2008). No desk or table so the TV is placed on the side of my bed. No working light besides a lamp in my bedroom. A TSA-taped shoebox supports the sensor for the Wii remotes. My material lifeways are already bunker-core.
Setup as described. Looks jank.

One of my friends is reading the Baburnama, the memoir of Mughal Empire founder Babur, and I guess Babur likes to insult his enemies by insulting their poetry, which is definitely very much a Turco-Persianate nobility thing, but I think that’s how politicians should continue to slam each other.

So both of these guys get claimed as the oldest recorded person’s name in the historical record. Whose team are you on? Kushim (𒆪𒋆; c. 3400-3000 BC), a signature on multiple accounting documents from the Eanna district of Uruk, or Iry-Hor (𓅃𓂋; c. 3170 BC), a possible pre-unification Memphite king.
A Sumerian clay tablet documenting barley quantities and signed Kushim in the upper left in early cuneiform script. Two inscribed characters on a vessel from the tomb of Iry-Hor, showing a rudimentary bird shape and the rough shape of the Egyptian character for a mouth.

I choose you, mušḫuššu (𒈲𒍽)! These spunky Mesopotamian guys are a combination of a snake, a lion, and an eagle and they are a popular decorative motif as a sacred animal of the Babylonian national god Marduk. Here depicted on Nebuchadnezzar II’s Ishtar Gate of Babylon around 569 BC.
A mušḫuššu in golden-painted relief on the blue brick wall of the Ishtar Gate, as in the Pergamon Museum. The animal has the general stature of a lion with the head and tail of a snake and the talons and feathers of an eagle.
