By the time Ed has gotten dressed, stowed his work safely away and roused the crew to assign their tasks for the day, it’s already time for him to dash off to meet Stede. He’s at a full sprint by the time he reaches the beach proper, too giddy to give a single fuck about how his creaky old knee will feel later, eyes on his prize of a golden head of hair, whose owner is now stepping out of the Revenge’s dinghy. By the time Stede realises how fast and close Ed’s approaching, it’s already too late for him to do anything but let a cry of ‘Edward Teach, don’t you DARE -ooof‘ before Ed makes impact, knocking them both off their feet.
Ed can tell that Stede was probably trying his best to be angry at him (he’d anticipated some level of backlash from Operation Curtains from the very start) but who can be mad when they’re being hugged and kissed this much? Maybe someone who’s just gotten tackled into wet sand perhaps, but Ed’s not going to let that dampen his enthusiasm for their reunion in the slightest. Just you try being miffed now Bonnet - checkmate!

It's hardly a ship of tea-drinkers; Lucius just tells him that tea is tea is tea. Black Pete probably doesn't even know how to spell it, for goodness’ sake. Opportunities to show off this particular collection with someone who properly gets it are few and far between, and Stede is hardly one to turn down such an opportunity.

The problem, then, is actually two problems:

1) In order to give Ed the full experience, he chose not to limit his tea tasting selection to only the sleepytime ones, and now he's wide awake and jittering out of his skin.

2) He really, really needs to urinate.

short oh my days snippet from chapter 18 of for wip wednesday because i haven't had much writing time lately

Maybe it was time to retire. Maybe it was time to just fuck off somewhere— maybe even back to New Zealand, why the fuck not— and just stare at walls or something. Waiting around to die felt a little dramatic— he could recognize that, at least— but living how he was living… It just didn't feel like it was working out anymore, or if it was, it wasn't working out the way he wanted it to. Maybe he'd lost his spark, or maybe he'd just gotten complacent. Maybe he needed to try painting, or something— sculpture, even; just something completely different, something where no one expected anything from him and he didn't expect anything from himself. (That was asking a lot, though; he always expected something from himself, and that was probably the whole problem.)

He couldn't bear to stick around for notes that night, lest he suggest something that made things worse again. He passed a few of the thoughts he'd jotted down off to Anne and excused himself with a quick kiss on the cheek, hoping to god that there'd be no one lingering around the theater who might recognize him on the way out and try to talk, even if it was to say something nice about the show— even if they meant it.

still plodding away on my BB buuuut cooking up a (hopefully) halloween oneshot too

Ed pays their entrance free to a young woman who is waiting at the gates of the house, inside a little wooden shed, complete with a blanket, a heater and a stash of snacks for when she doesn’t have customers. It says Alma on her name badge and she is in her early twenties Ed reckons. She looks very cool, dressed in an all-black witchy type outfit, bright golden hair in long plaits interwoven with glitter and has dark make up on her eyes accompanied by purple lipstick - she smiles gratefully with a ‘oh, thanks!’ when Ed compliments the colour of it. She is mid-way through handing a map over to Ed, explaining that places to visit on the land - A small ‘ghostly’ maze, a couple of interactive shows in the old stables, a food court in the gardens and the house itself - when Jack interrupts with a “yeah alright whatever, which is the scariest one?”

She narrows her eyes at him, annoyed at the interjection and she replies, more snippily than before - “there’s plenty in the main house that should scare you sir.”

Jack starts to walk off and Ed takes the map from her gently. “Thanks, appreciate the info,” he says quietly. She cocks her head at him, and her eyes narrow in a different way. This time it’s more scrutiny.

“Are you Blackbeard?” she says after a moment.

"

“Er… yeah. Yeah I am.”

She smiles at him, a knowing look in her eyes and her eyes glint with something like mischief.

“My Dad loves your books. He’s in there somewhere. Maybe say hi if you see a blond guy in a teal outfit."

He turns to Stede who, judging by the way he is standing frozen in the doorway, seems to have just had the same realisation.

"Stede? Is this okay? I could go back and get us another room, if you'd be more comfortable?"

Stede blinks. "Oh no, it's fine." His eyes dart to the bed, to Ed, back to the bed.

"You're sure, mate?"

"Mmhmm," Stede squeaks.

"Yeah… see, I don't believe you. You've got this whole fight or flight thing going on right now," Ed says, gesturing to the entirety of Stede. "Wanna talk about it?"

Stede seems to deflate, all at once. "Sorry. I just, um… I don't know what you… well, expect of me?"

"Expect?"

"Yes, because… well, we kissed, and so —"

"Oh whoa, okay. Stede, can we sit for a minute?"

There was a sigh. A very familiar sigh, actually. The sort of sigh that had made a frequent appearance during the course of their marriage when Stede was doing something especially stupid.

“Yes, please explain why my husband is wearing a dog collar and you’re both naked,” Mary said and pinched the bridge of her nose. “And make it make sense.”

“Oh, well–” Stede glanced at Doug. “We’re uh, Ed has a friend named Fang that works with dogs and he’s offered to give us a free behavioral consult for um… for uh, the–”

“The peeing,” Doug said brightly.

“Yes, that,” Stede grumbled while Mary dropped her hand to smirk at him, her confused irritation turning towards amusement. She was always amused he’d been spending his night emptying his bladder all over Ed’s things. “And I can’t be two places at once, but Doug’s fur is quite light colored, of course.”

“Clearly,” Mary leaned against the doorway, eyes flicking down which made Stede remember he was naked. Not that he minded being naked, but it was a bit more awkward when he was standing next to her naked husband. He snagged his pants, pulling them on awkwardly.

“But my ear folds, and his doesn’t, so I changed so he could get some pics and now we’re trying to figure out how to fold his ear for the call.”

Mary’s brow furrowed. “Is Ed going to be on the call?”

“I… no?” Stede blinked a few times. “Why?”

“Then what does it matter? His friend hasn’t had any close contact.” Mary waved her hand at Doug. “Not that I’m for this insanity, but he won’t care if the ear is folded or not.”

“We’re going for a pup cup after and I get to ride in the car!” Doug said excitedly. “Stede’s going to let me stick my head out the window!”

“Oh Jesus wept,” Mary blinked a few times.

Stede saw the headline first: "An Open Door in Space"

He thought it might refer to a new method of travel between the various human outposts. He was on a station near Pluto now, post-divorce, while Mary and the kids (and Mary's new husband, Doug) were still near Neptune. Anything that sped up the journeys was welcome, especially because after Pluto, he was headed to Earth. His new job–now that he'd quit the Bonnet family conglomerate–took him all over the scattered human settlements.

Following the Beyaz invasion, humans had been transported far and wide. Nowadays, decades later, there was more freedom and more travel–and greater interest in human history.

Stede had found a job with Spriggs and Black, Entrepreneurs. Lucius and Pete were a husband-and-husband team that owned an art gallery and general store, and also hired out a printing press to certain groups. One of those was the collective of human historians, botanists, and other specialists who'd formed soon after the invasion, and whose researches Stede had kept up with as best he could from the sidelines while still under his father's thumb.

Now, as a lover of beauty, he sought art and artists across the solar system, making purchases for and inviting artists to the Spriggs and Black Gallery. He was free–he ought to appreciate all he'd gained by finally carving out a life for himself on his own terms, no longer shackled to an arranged marriage and a corrupt family legacy.

Sure, his nights might be lonely–

And maybe this odd headline could help him out in that regard.

Turned out "open door" was some sort of modern slang, a euphemism for new relationships.

It wasn't a news headline at all, but an ad.

Happy #WIPWednesday *slaps hood* this bad boy has it all. The brattiest bottom Stede ever, healing and angry Ed, forced marriage, the worst decisions two 20 year olds can make together, psychic mating bonds, and just so much jealous/possessive sex you have no idea. One day it'll be released.

Stede woke up with a gasp, his heart in his throat and a sheen of fear-sweat cooling on his face as he kicked off his blankets. The memory of something dark and evil grasping at his throat was replaced with his own ragged breaths and the normal darkness of the bedroom as he stared up at the ceiling with his chest heaving. The nightmare had been so real, it always was, even when it wasn’t his nightmare. He closed his eyes as the fear continued to hammer on him. He heard Ed thrashing in his sleep, crying out and snarling to himself as he fought whatever demon lurked in recurring dreams.

“Fuck,” Stede whispered and rubbed a hand down his face, shifting on his side to look across the massive bed to where Ed was still trapped in his dream.

Six times in the last two weeks the mating bond had woken him up with terror nipping at his heels. He fumbled, trying to find a way to push the emotions away, but omegas were never taught how to shut out their mates, were they? Only alphas got to choose when, and if, they felt their omegas.

That bitter thought nearly made him roll back over to leave Ed to his nightmare, but the alpha made a soft choked sob before scrabbling at his throat. Stede swallowed, remembering the feel of hands at his throat, the helpless sensation of being hauled from the ground by a formless foe. He gritted his teeth and shifted in the bed, crawling across the distance between himself and his alpha.

He tried to tell himself it wasn’t care or concern when he brushed the alpha’s cheek, feeling damp sweat and tears. Stede didn’t even know this man whose freshly healed mark had bound them together, but he wasn’t a monster. And Stede needed his sleep, which wasn’t going to happen while their bond was wide open with terror leaking from the dream.

“Edward, wake up,” Stede tried to sound irritated, but to his horror a soft trill spilled into the words, designed to soothe and comfort. “Ed?”

“No…mmm…n-no,” Ed’s brows furrowed and he flailed again.
