An ancient and magical amber bear 🐻 ✨ Carved some 10,000 years ago, it washed up on a beach at Fanø in Denmark from a submerged Mesolithic settlement under the North Sea. National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a small and ancient figurine of an amber bear carved some 10,000 years ago during the Danish Mesolithic period. The museum lighting makes the amber glow translucent orange against a dark display case background. The bear is displayed on a small metal stand viewed in profile facing right. The ears, muzzle, and mouth are defined. The neck has a polished groove suggesting it was once suspended on a cord. The characteristic shoulder hump of a brown bear is clearly defined. There are some finely incised horizontal lines along the belly. The legs are incomplete. Length 6.5cm. Amber has many properties which may have been associated with 'magic' for ancient peoples. For example, when rubbed against fur, amber produces static electricity which can give off sparks in the dark, make hair stand on end, and attract small things towards it.
The bear was found in 1991 on a west coast beach of the Danish North Sea island of Fanø. It is one of a small number of amber animal figurines from the Baltic Sea region which have been assigned to the Mesolithic period by means of a typo-chronological approach and /or other contextual information.

Roman stone altar with a horned god believed to have been a fertility god native to the North East of ‘Britannia’ Durham University Museum of Archaeology 📷 by me #ReliefWednesday #Archaeology
My photo shows a weathered stone relief depicting a human-like figure, standing looking back at the viewer, with a round face, with rudimentary eyes, nose, and mouth. There are what seem to be two straight horns on top of the head. On the upper body the nipples are marked by engraved circles. The carved details of the lower body are indistinct, possibly a very large phallus?

My wife wanted me to try her gluten-free ramen so she extended a fork full of them towards me. I put my hand under them, as one does, so they didn't drip on the table and she dumped the pile of noodles onto my palm, like that's what I wanted, with complete confidence. I love my wife.

Yesterday I visited Corbridge #Roman Town (Coria). Just south of Hadrian’s Wall, it was the most northerly town in the Empire. The smooth flagged floor of the town’s west granary is still looking good after 1,800 years! 🤩 #RomanSiteSaturday #Archaeology
My photo shows the excavated stone floor of the west granary at Corbridge Roman Town (Roman Coria) stretching away into the distance like a broad, paved walkway. Huge, flat stone slabs rest on short stone walls, creating dark hollow spaces beneath where air once circulated in the ventilated basement to keep the grain which was stored on the floor dry. On either side are the now low, rough stone outer walls and on the left the remains of the outer wall of the east granary. Beyond the Roman ruins, the landscape opens to green trees, rolling hills, and a blue sky, dotted with fluffy white clouds. The east and west granaries were built under emperor Septimius Severus (AD 198-209).
