What is an electrostate? The word has found its way into the international energy vocabulary. The Financial Times, Forbes, Ember and Carnegie all use it. But it is rarely defined. I went through the reports and papers to unpack it & found four dimensions. 🧵 janrosenow.substack.com/p/what-is-an...

At least two dozen countries have launched programmes to swap oil and gas for electricity since the Iran war began. I spoke to ABC's PM about why, alongside António Guterres and Fatih Birol. Crises push countries towards energy they can make at home.

Since the Hormuz crisis, EU gas prices are up 132% and oil 52%. Electricity is up 44%, after falling through spring. Every boiler, car and furnace that switches to electricity is less exposed to the energy crisis. Electrification is increasingly energy security.

Of course it makes me proud to see the University of Oxford once again topping the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and holding the longest run at number one of any university in the history of the rankings. Relieved it hasn't slipped since I arrived last year!

Wind and solar supplied 33% of EU electricity in the 12 months to August 2026, against 29% from fossil. In 2016 it was 13% and 43%.

Electricity is 23% of global final energy but delivers 37% of useful energy and powers 46% of the global economy. We don't need to replace every fossil joule. We need to replace the services. A much smaller task. Great to see the @iea.org’s new Electrification report finally measure this.

Aalborg now has 241,000 m³ of hot water storage, the largest in Denmark, plus 150 MW of electric boilers and a 177 MW seawater heat pump. That's 217 MW of flexible demand, holding one to three winter days of heat. District heating in Denmark is becoming a critical flexibility resource.

Lots of discussion. To be clear: 1) I’m concerned about the impact data centres can have on the grid and the electricity they use must not be from fossil fuels. 2) But where they do get built let’s use the waste heat if we can.

This image went viral a few months ago. Data centres are energy hungry and can cause substantial grid constraints and in worst case new fossil generation. But there is a silver lining: we can use some of the waste heat for district heating. More here: janrosenow.substack.com/p/district-h...

European gas is above €82/MWh - the highest since late 2022. Hormuz remains largely shut and gas storage is at 68% going into winter. None of this started in Europe but we pay for it. The only exit is using less gas. Heat pumps, electrified industry, insulation.
