NEW EPISODE: "Changing Lanes." A new documentary explores the fight to make Brooklyn's McGuinness Blvd safer following the tragic death of a beloved teacher. More than about a bike lane, it's a film very much made for this political and cultural moment. Listen: podcasts.apple.com/lu/podcast/c...
Poster for Changing Lanes that shows overhead shot of worker in reflective vest painting green bike lane on black asphalt. "Changing Lanes" is in white and yellow. Below it it says "A documentary by Ben Wolf."

Amidst a housing affordability crisis, there is legislation moving through City Hall right now to arbitrarily double the number of historical landmarks and make it harder to build housing, and put us at risk of violating state law. www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/arti...

A supervisor wants to double the number of historic landmarks in S.F. Is it a NIMBY ploy?
Opinion: We can’t just preserve the past, we have to encourage new great design that we’ll want to landmark down the road, writes columnist Allison Arieff.

Probably the most difficult thing YIMBYs face -- really, anyone who lives in a city -- is that government-subsidized street parking is one of the single largest barriers to affordability, safe streets, and climate action. That's because drivers view it as an entitlement, like social security. 🧵

A charitable interpretation would be they were responding to this:
1926 zoning map. Downtown is the black strip to the west. It is surrounded by stripped light industrial zoning. The east is zoned for apartments (a light strip, reminiscent of being “nearly a nuisance,” as the Supreme Court put it in Euclid v Ambler). The apartment district is surrounded on all sides by industrial zoning. To the south is a zone for single-family homes.

This is a great read and underscores that fighting car dependency is a basic quality of life issue. Lloyd makes an important here: Older residents who often oppose initiatives to reduce car dependency will also soon bear the burden. But they never imagine a future where they can't drive.

Early forms of zoning surrounded apartment districts with industrial zoning, to hem in and contain racial and class mixing. Later, this pattern was inverted: instead of industrial districts surrounding apartments, apartments were made to surround semi-industrial land uses: big-ass roads. Toxic stuff

There is no compelling urban planning reason to concentrate apartment buildings on loud, polluted, dangerous main streets. This is solely a political strategy by planners trying to avoid NIMBY backlash to proposed apartments. This political strategy DOES NOT WORK. Homeowners oppose housing anyway!

People also assume that the natural state of the housing market is for housing prices to just go up forever relative to inflation because that's what they've done over the last 30 years in large cities. This leads to the idea that home ownership intrinsically "builds wealth". No it doesn't.

Still not over the MN legislature increasing the car subsidy to overcome a period of time that showcases so much of the downside of autonormativity. This isn't a solution. It's digging the hole deeper. For context, $254m could 2x the bikeway lane miles for the entire state or fund brand new abrt.

I have no objections to living in MF housing, but if we are going to see a broad uptake in e-bikes, we need to address the storage issue. You can have whatever subsidy you want, but you need a place to park it! Right now the garage-class divide is real.
