I think what’s happening in the West Bank right now is best understood as a single unending pogrom

But also, TBF, a lot of this framing probably also comes from message testing (Sightline, WNN, etc)

No joke, I think a lot of this comes from Claude, and I think Claude is NIMBY-coded.

I participated in the #WeekWithoutDriving last week. It was great! I had to take my cargo-bike into the shop on the second-to-last day, but managed to go through the whole week without driving because of the scooter + bus combo.

Week Without Driving is about access. Tell us what would make it safer and easier to get where you need to who when you need to get somewhere walking, taking transit, or riding a scooter or bike? What infrastructure gaps do you wish your community would fix? #WeekWithoutDriving

As a parent of young children, I’d much, much rather have safer streets close to these destinations, even if I am not biking.

NEW EPISODE: "Changing Lanes." A new documentary explores the fight to make Brooklyn's McGuinness Blvd safer following the tragic death of a beloved teacher. More than about a bike lane, it's a film very much made for this political and cultural moment. Listen: podcasts.apple.com/lu/podcast/c...
Poster for Changing Lanes that shows overhead shot of worker in reflective vest painting green bike lane on black asphalt. "Changing Lanes" is in white and yellow. Below it it says "A documentary by Ben Wolf."

Idk. I’d just take Reed’s recommendation and funnel the revenue into improving infrastructure in the area, instead of funneling into (presumably) slush funds. But 🤷

14 hours later and my mentions are still full of angry treatises about badly behaved cyclists. Bike lanes are not a reward for good cyclist behavior! They are infrastructure proven to make cities safer for ALL ROAD USERS. Whatever way cyclists have wronged you is irrelevant to the discussion!

Amidst a housing affordability crisis, there is legislation moving through City Hall right now to arbitrarily double the number of historical landmarks and make it harder to build housing, and put us at risk of violating state law. www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/arti...

A supervisor wants to double the number of historic landmarks in S.F. Is it a NIMBY ploy?
Opinion: We can’t just preserve the past, we have to encourage new great design that we’ll want to landmark down the road, writes columnist Allison Arieff.

Probably the most difficult thing YIMBYs face -- really, anyone who lives in a city -- is that government-subsidized street parking is one of the single largest barriers to affordability, safe streets, and climate action. That's because drivers view it as an entitlement, like social security. 🧵

1926 zoning map. Downtown is the black strip to the west. It is surrounded by stripped light industrial zoning. The east is zoned for apartments (a light strip, reminiscent of being “nearly a nuisance,” as the Supreme Court put it in Euclid v Ambler).

This is a great read and underscores that fighting car dependency is a basic quality of life issue. Lloyd makes an important here: Older residents who often oppose initiatives to reduce car dependency will also soon bear the burden. But they never imagine a future where they can't drive.

You do not have to hand it to Lindsey Graham, but this insight is key to understanding most government and boardroom dynamics. We’re governed by the people who show up and do the stuff. Not automatically the wisest or most studied. All you have to do to improve it is often get into the room.

Early forms of zoning surrounded apartment districts with industrial zoning, to hem in and contain racial and class mixing. Later, this pattern was inverted: instead of industrial districts surrounding apartments, apartments were made to surround semi-industrial land uses: big-ass roads. Toxic stuff

There is no compelling urban planning reason to concentrate apartment buildings on loud, polluted, dangerous main streets. This is solely a political strategy by planners trying to avoid NIMBY backlash to proposed apartments. This political strategy DOES NOT WORK. Homeowners oppose housing anyway!

You can't really reconcile housing being a 'great investment' (beating the stock market in accruing value) and housing being broadly affordable
