What are all the best legends and myths and novels throughout time but stories about how the main character is actually supported and taught and empowered by the characters around them? Art is already democratic. Anyone can do it. What AI does is make it EASY. And fast. And unfortunately unless you are a rare virtuoso, getting good at art is neither easy nor fast. (and obviously not original, if you are using AI.)

This is a good illustration of why "distracted" is a bit of a euphemism. Distraction means you aren't paying your full attention. But we lose all situational awareness when scrolling our phones, and we know from studies of pilots, it doesn't come back that quickly even in an emergency.

Does anyone know why #DiabloCanyon (the nuclear power plant) got evacuated today around 5 pm? I can't find any info anywhere, but I was there at Avila Beach and an officer told me that was what was happening. Just a drill? No sirens obviously, and they didn't clear the beach.

this from @ftrain.com is terrific, unsurprisingly, and I think this sentence actually understates the issue; it's not just that the big labs are in a hurry, it's that they don't see producing useful and well-documented tools for using these models as an important part of what they're doing

I don’t blame the coders for this, or even the bosses. I blame the big A.I. companies, who are in such a hurry that they often release new versions of their models and tools without manuals or even clear YouTube tutorials.

If AI is going to kill us all within ten years, it'll be because they fired all the food safety inspectors and water treatment plant operators and replaced them with automated agents trained on MAHA nonsense. The "AI-pocalypse" will be much grosser, slower, and more painful than people envision.

Our new paper asks the question: is there any precedent for recent, high-severity fires that have removed >100,000 acres of forests from northern New Mexico? Based on the locations of trees that recorded surface fires over the prior 500 years, the answer is, statistically speaking, "not a chance".
