Monday morning outside Rotterdam Centraal, thousands of cyclists stream toward the station in a carefully choreographed flow. What you’re seeing is the power of systems thinking—the bicycle and train both succeed because they work together seamlessly, where each mode extends the reach of the other.

Legendary Japanese photographer Masahisa Fukase gently helping his beloved cat, Sasuke, drink water from a temizuya (water purification pavilion) at a Japanese shrine.
Crouched beside a massive, dark stone water basin (chōzubachi), the subject holds a long-handled ladle (hishaku) low to the ground so a small, spotted cat can drink. One hand rests with tender protection across the feline’s back as it stretches forward to lap water from the metal bowl. Above the carved stone, bamboo racks support an array of resting ladles, while polished river pebbles glisten in the drainage trough below. Captured in soft, monochromatic silver tones, the photograph evokes a deeply tender sensory atmosphere: the cool, steady drip of spring water splashing against wet river stones, the faint clink of a metal ladle against stone, the rhythmic sound of lapping water, and the quiet, reverent stillness of a sanctuary courtyard sheltered from the rushing world. This intimate moment captures legendary photographer Masahisa Fukase (1934–2012) and his iconic feline companion, Sasuke, whose playful and enigmatic presence became the central subject of Fukase’s celebrated photobooks in the late 1970s. In Shinto tradition, the temizuya (or chōzuya) serves as a sacred pavilion where worshipers perform ritual purification (misogi) by rinsing their hands and mouth before entering the shrine precinct. Fukase’s gentle extension of this purification ritual to sustain a small kitten bridges the solemnity of ancestral spiritual practice with the tender, unvarnished intimacy of daily life.

Ginnekenmarkt, Breda in 1974 and today
The top image shows a cobbled square packed with parked cars on all sides, including a Mercedes, a Fiat 500 and a Ford, surrounded by metal railings. Patches of cobbles have been dug up around a central stone water pump. Today the same square, now a packed café terrace. Rows of wicker chairs and tables fill the space where the cars once stood, with people eating and drinking under large furled umbrellas. Mature trees with golden autumn leaves shade the square, and the same stone water pump still stands at the centre.

“Totoro”. Studio Gibli, Japan
Framed by the dark, silhouetted trunks of ancient trees and branches laden with vibrant magenta foliage, an enchanted woodland realm opens into a soft, luminous mist. In the foreground, perched upon an emerald-paved stone path, the small white forest spirit (Chibi-Totoro) and medium blue spirit (Chū-Totoro) sit side-by-side, their backs turned as they gaze toward the glowing horizon. Rising beyond the grassy knoll, the colossal, gentle form of the great forest guardian (O-Totoro) emerges, his immense slate-grey head and wide, inquisitive eyes peeking through the canopy. A hazy canyon and pale, layered mountain peaks drift in the background under a soft, dreamlike sky. The illustration evokes a magical sensory atmosphere: the cool, damp fragrance of moss-covered earth and spring leaves, the quiet whisper of mountain breezes through high boughs, the faint rustle of spirit footsteps along ancient stones, and the breathless, reverent awe of stepping into a hidden sanctuary of nature. Inspired by Studio Ghibli’s 1988 animated masterwork My Neighbor Totoro (Tonari no Totoro), directed by Hayao Miyazaki, this stylized artwork celebrates the film’s profound roots in Shinto animism and environmental reverence. Set in the lush, agricultural satoyama landscape of Japan’s post-war countryside, the narrative re-enchants the natural world by portraying kami—indigenous spirits that inhabit ancient camphor trees, rivers, and deep woodlands—as benevolent guardians accessible through the pure, unsullied imagination of youth. Studio Ghibli’s legacy of traditional hand-drawn animation embodies the spirit of monozukuri (artisanal mastery and devotion to material craft), where thousands of hand-painted cels and richly rendered background art celebrate the textures of rain, wind, and foliage.

Large rodent engineering!
View of a beaver dam from the "front" You can large and small logs stacked across a stream, with smaller sticks/leaves/mud wedged between. Some water is spilling over the dam and there is a small side channel cutting around also letting water out. Behind the dam, a deep pool is green amongst dark green spruces and poplars that have mostly lost their leaves. The ground around the pond/stream is covered with fallen yellow leaves, spruce needles with a few low bushes. The sky is cloudy. "Side" view of a beaver dam. You can see the stacks of sticks on top of larger logs in the right of the frame with yellow leaves/bits of mud caught at the top of it. Some whitewater in the distance is a small channel where water is flowing over the dam. The pool behind the dam is deep and greenish brown with dark spruce and one yellow-leafed poplar reflected.
