Another splendid October page, this one from the Huth Book of Hours produced possibly in Bruges between 1485 and 1490. The floral decoration is lovely.

Celebrating the first day of October with the October page from the early 15th Century Book of Hours, the Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry. Preparing the fields for winter and sowing seeds against a backdrop of the magnificent Louvre Palace. As usual the blue colour is superb.

On this day 30th September 1399 Henry Bolingbroke, eldest son of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, was formally proclaimed King of England after his cousin Richard II resigned the position. It was October before he was crowned King Henry IV in Westminster Abbey.

On this day 29th September 1399 King Richard II, incarcerated in the Tower of London, finally agreed to the demand to resign his crown to his cousin Henry Bolingbroke. Shakespeare's magnificent 'King Richard II' in the BBC Hollow Crown, with Ben Wishaw and Rory Kinnear as Richard and Bolingbroke.

On this day 28th September 1399 a delegation of earls, clergy and lords went to the Tower of London, where he was kept in confinement, to petition King Richard II to resign the throne in favour of his cousin Henry Bolingbroke, Duke of Lancaster.

From the Archives. The sun shining on the massive structure of 11th C Goodrich Castle near Ross on Wye, built to guard a strategic crossing of the river Wye. Magnficent views over the surrounding countryside. A few years now since I was last there so perhaps an autumnal visit in on the cards.

Celebrating 24th September the Feast Day of our Lady of Walsingham. All that remains today of the original Augustinian Priory at Walsingham, destroyed in the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The restored Slipper Chapel became the National Shrine in 1943. Many still make the pilgrimage.

On This Day 22nd September 1411 - or perhaps yesterday - was born Richard Duke of York, son of Richard of Conisbrough, younger son of Edmund of Langley Duke of York. On This Day 20th September 1301 the notorious Roger Mortimer, later Earl of March, married Joan, the wealthy de Geneville heiress, in the church of St Mary the Virgin in Pembridge in the Welsh Marches. Afterwards Roger rebuilt the church to its present form, the separate belfrey being added.

Owain Glyn Dŵr was proclaimed Prince of Wales by his followers on September 16 1400, at his manor of Glyndyfrdwy. This marked the beginning of the Glyn Dŵr Rebellion against the English rule of King Henry IV. A magnificent statue of Glyn Dwr in Corwen, unveiled in 2007
