There are lots of roads in the Dales which would benefit from this. Access restricted to permit holders and emergency vehicles to showcase the beauty of the area without the hazard presented by motorists.

If they start dropping 'white light' into speeches we'll know it's sex and amphetamines, they're on about, rather than pipes and raincoats.

This is lovely by @kathrynwilliamsuk.bsky.social. A wistful song and mesmerising animation. Thanks for sharing it @lakesstiles.bsky.social.

I made a new ash handle for my Nic Westermann swan-necked gouge as I wasn't happy with the shape of the older one I'd made from yew. The Shinto saw rasp proved to be the perfect tool for it. The coarse teeth remove material fast and the finer ones leave a good, slightly textured, finish, for grip.

Was at a motor-racing circuit with my students yesterday. Not really my thing but a very interesting insight into the scene.

If I pushed a boulder down a hill and it wiped out a family picnic, I'd be liable, I think. Is this that much more complicated?

Pedestrians on pavements and in shared-use spaces are at more risk from drivers on nearby roads than from cyclists sharing those spaces with them. It's about time we began addressing our concerns and solutions more proportionately to the risks.

It's not a true contest, many of the tunes barely qualify as songs and it's not even entirely European. Our Wimbledon Correspondent is correct. A clown show.

It's as if these people have really tried, been patient, but it's just not working out. Rubbish. They place themselves & their money wherever the conditions best favour their tastes & they do it in a heartbeat. Mind the invisible hand doesn't give you a thick ear on the way back to Monaco.

One of the delights of my job is being drawn into the work of other teachers. I got to make this on an art visit to a pottery studio. I don't think The Great Pottery Throwdown will be troubled any time soon.
A ceramic plaque, like a wooden picture frame, with representation of an axe, knife, oak leaf and acorn. The glaze colours are washed-out but the forms aren't too bad.

Very sad to hear that Joe has gone. His book "Bird Therapy" made so much sense to me as I unpicked my own neurodivergent character in the light of nature and outdoor activity. Rest in peace. Back to the earth.

I did something, on my bike, that irritated a motorist earlier this week. The petty-minded, half-man decided the right response was to punishment pass me, within a foot, in their 2 tonne SUV.

Circuit training hasn't been part of my life for, perhaps, 25 years. So a Hyrox session, today, proved something of a rude awakening. #Oof

Channeling my inner Kurt Vonnegut on my ride today. Farting around, smiling at dogs and lovers, shooting the breeze and chatting with strangers. Barely turning the pedals over 25 familiar kilometers. Just what my tired brain and soul needed.
Garmin map of my - ahem - circuitous route around Saltaire, Baildon, Eldwick, Gilstead and Bingley.

I love, BTW, that we have a "Sir Fred Hoyle Way" in Bingley - "it is better to be interesting and wrong than boring and right". Hmm...My bike propped up in a bird-watching hide near Bingley Five Rise Locks. The apertures are frustratingly too high or too low for me to look out of comfortably.

I saw hirundines gathered on electrical transmission wires. They won't be with us for long now.

Headed up there today on my push-bike. Laid for a while under "Williwaw" and listened to the buzz and thrum of the light winds in the sculpture and drew the scent of peat and heather into my lungs. #HarmonicFields #ChampsHarmonique #BradfordCultureCompany

Things I was frightened of as a child: - The monsters under the bed & in the toilet - The possibility of death of my parents/being separated from them - Recurring nightmares - Nuclear annihilation - The possibility of a life of loneliness - The suspicion that there was something wrong with me

There's a local (to me - 😆) legend that Roger Moore used to have modelling contracts with a number of West Yorkshire woollen yarn firms and, when on business in the area, would stay in Baildon, in a distinctive villa-like house on Shipley Glen. If you know the house, it all fits.

View from the "sky bed" in my local woods this evening. I needed a walk to clear my head.
Oak tree trunks and branches silhouetted against the sky. Beyond you can see the green/brown canopies of more distant trees.

Absolutely. The government should be confident to condemn a racist, authoritarian ideology based on falsehood, cruelty and with intimidation and violence as core approaches; regardless of its adherents' methodology in pursuing it. Legitimate concerns are not based in ignorant hatred. It's not hard.

Carved a bowl today. A nice distraction from the news.. It's from a cherry tree I felled in my garden this spring. When it's dried I'll "clean carve" it, making finishing cuts. I might decorate it with chip-carving and/or paint and oil it.
A small, boat-shaped wooden bowl in my hand. A wooden-herringbone-patterned vinyl floor in the background.

Yes. I hope the current "no arrests" situation is tactical and doors will be getting kicked in starting tomorrow morning. Full English going cold. Thugs dragged out in underpants and handcuffs.

I thought this as soon as I read it. "Counter terror won't let him on stage". Now that's not the police, is it? It's Reform's weasel words and spin. Perhaps referring to their own security people. Credulously lapped up, conflated and reported as "police" by BBC. Or deliberate? Worrying.

The capture of local newspapers' comments pages by racists is so prevalent. That there's no moderation of blatantly hateful comment is surely a threat to local democracy. Im looking at you @bradfordtanda.bsky.social #NaziBar

At 60km today's was my longest ride for a good while. It chucked it down at the furthest point from home and I got soaked. Happily the train at Ilkley sped me home.
Garmin map shows my route, from home and over Ilkley Moor to Ilkley, then up the Wharfe Valley to Burnsall. Then back down the Wharfe to Ilkley.

They encourage cyclists (especially novices, those most at risk) and drivers into rubbish road positions. - Cyclists dangerously in the gutter. - Drivers too wide to be safely overtaken.

Some truth in this. Cycling, walking and public transport connects us with places and people in a way that driving doesn't. It's society's loss that we make favour one so much at the expense of the other.

Trying to lower my calorie intake and increase exercise (after piling on a bit of holiday timber) but feeling a little tired tonight. Any road up. Two cycle rides today and I got all my steps in on an evening walk. Happy with that. Saw a bat. A run tomorrow.
Dusky view of Northcliffe Meadow, Shipley. My local green-space. The parched late summer grass is fringed with native woodland. The clouds have a pink tinge of dusk.

A mooching kind of ride on familiar trails today. I noticed this water body for the first time. Intrigued at the prospect of a limpid pool, teaming with life, I investigated. Sadly it was no more than a cattle-trampled, rushy morass.
